FAIRBANKS — Lathrop’s Kasey Barnes successfully defended her air rifle individual title Friday, while Hutchison scored the team title on the first day of competition in the Mid Alaska Conference high school rifle championships.

Barnes posted an unofficial score of 567 out of 600 to claim the conference crown at the E.F. Horton Range on the lower level of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center. Her score was eight points higher than the winning score she posted a year ago.

Second place went to Hutchison’s Blaze Brooks with a 563, while teammate Roscoe Beadles finished third with a 562.

Hutchison knocked off defending champion Lathrop in the team competition 2,210-2,187. Lathrop had gone through the regular season undefeated.

Complete results were not available Friday evening. Air rifle results will be made official today.

The two-day championship event concludes with the smallbore competition today at the Horton Range.

The first relay will start at 10 a.m., with the second beginning at 12:45 p.m. and the third at 3:30 p.m.

Each participant will fire 20 shots in the prone, standing and kneeling positions.

An awards ceremony is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
