FAIRBANKS—Ohio was good to the Alaska Nanooks rifle team for the second time in two days.

On Tuesday, the Nanooks downed the University of Akron 4,699-4,633. The victory over the 14th-ranked Zips followed Monday’s team-record 4,711 points in a win in Columbus against No. 15 Ohio State University, which generated 4,652 points.

The sweep of the ranked opponents propelled the Nanooks from No. 4 to No. 2 in the College Rifle Coaches Association/NCAA national polls. Alaska is behind West Virginia in the polls, and the Mountaineers and Nanooks meet in the E.F. Horton Range in the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

On Tuesday in Akron, Tim Sherry, Mats Eriksson, Ryan Anderson and Lorelie Stanfield paced the Nanooks.

Anderson led with scores of 590 in the smallbore competition and 593 for the air rifle. Eriksson was second in the smallbore with a 583 and he fired a 590 in the air rifle.

Sherry recorded a 591 for the air rifle and 578 in the smallbore. Stanfield registered a 587 for the air rifle and a 582 at the University of Akron’s range.

Sagen Maddalena posted an impressive 591 in the air rifle while Soren Butler finished with 578 on the smallbore targets.
