Nanooks rifle team sets scoring record

FAIRBANKS — According to head coach Dan Jordan, the No. 4 Alaska Nanooks rifle team has typically struggled in its first match following the holiday break.

On Monday in Columbus, Ohio, the Nanooks did not struggle. The Nanooks shot a program record 4,711 as they beat No. 15 Ohio State at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range.

“They came up with the plan, followed through on it, and the results speak for themselves,” Jordan said in a University of Alaska Fairbanks press release. “I am so proud of them for sticking to it and their hard work paid off with a great performance and an awesome score.”

The Buckeyes fired a 4,652.

The Nanooks, who have won three straight matches against teams ranked in top 20, shot a 2,340 in smallbore and 2,371 in air rifle. The Buckeyes shot 2,314 in smallbore and 2,338 in air rifle.

Senior Ryan Anderson led the Nanooks in air rifle, firing a match-high 597. Junior Lorelie Stanfield followed with a 594 while redshirt freshman Sagen Maddalena and junior Tim Sherry each fired a 590.

Soren Butler rounded out the team air rifle score with a 577.

Sherry shot a match-high 589 in smallbore to lead the Nanooks. Anderson followed with a 588 and senior Mats Erickson shot a 582. Butler fired a 581 and Stanfield finished the Nanooks team score with a 572.

The Nanooks continue their Ohio trip today when they face the University of Akron at 5 a.m. AST.

Josh Black led the Buckeyes with a 591 in air rifle while Deanna Binnie shot a team-high 583 in smallbore.
