Former, current UAF shooters finish top 10 in Olympic trials

FAIRBANKS—One current and two former Alaska Nanooks shooters finished in the top 10 at the USA Shooting Winter Airgun Champions in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Former Alaska shooter Ryan Anderson finished fourth and Matt Rawlings took ninth in the men’s competition at the Olympic Training Center while redshirt sophomore Sagen Maddalena finished seventh in the women’s championship.

The championships also were serving as the Olympic Trials for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Anderson began Sunday in second place but fired a 615.7 on the final day to finish in fourth at 1,870.9. Anderson fired a 620.1 in the opening round on Friday before shooting a 621.1 on Saturday.

Rawlings finished with a score of 1,859.4 after firing a 619.8 on Sunday. Rawlings began the competition with a 619.9 on Friday and a 617.7 on Saturday.

Maddalena shot a 416.4 on Sunday to finish with a three-day score of 419.4. Her Sunday score was her highest score of the competition after shooting a 413.9 on Friday and 411.8 on Saturday.

Maddalena also finished third among collegiate shooters in the women’s competition.

Current Nanooks senior Tim Sherry finished 17th with a score of 1,852.7. Sherry fired a 620.2 on Sunday after beginning the championships with a 614.3 on Friday and a 618.2 on Saturday.

Former Nanook Mike Liuzza took 19th with a 1,850.3. Liuzza shot a 617.2 on Friday, 616.9 on Saturday and 616.2 on Sunday.
