Nanooks, former Nanook shoot at World Cups

FAIRBANKS — Alaska Nanooks rifle freshman Sagen Maddalena, junior Ryan Anderson and former Nanooks shooter Matt Emmons competed in two International Shooting Sport Federation World Cups in Europe with the United States national team.

The trio shot at the World Cup Munich in Germany on June 4-13 before traveling to Slovenia on June 13-21 for the World Cup Maribor.

Maddalena, who has yet to shoot a match for the Nanooks after redshirting her freshman season, shot in the 10-meter air rifle matches at both competitions. She placed 47th June 8 in Munich, shooting a score of 412.4 in the 40-shot match. Her score in Munich ranked second among American shooters.

Maddalena’s score was a tenth of a point better then Patriot Rifle Conference rival and Texas Christian University shooter Sarah Beard.

Maddalena followed it up by nearly qualifying for the individual final in Slovenia on June 15. Her score of 414.0 was good for 17th overall and second among American shooters again. She was just 2.4 points away from finishing in the top eight, which would have advanced her to individual final.

Maddalena again bested Beard in Slovenia, this time by 1.3 points.

Anderson, who was named to the National Rifle Association First Team All-American in air rifle and smallbore, shot in the 10-meter air rifle, 50-meter prone and 50-meter three positions matches in Munich and Maribor.

Anderson finished 81st overall in the men’s air rifle match in Munich with a score of 617.3, which was good for second among the Americans. A week later in Maribor, Anderson finished 67th in the air rifle match in Maribor with a score of 613.5.

Emmons, who shot for the Nanooks from 1999-2003, competed in the prone and three position matches in both countries.

In the prone match in Munich, Anderson and Emmons were separated by by just a single tenth of point. Emmons shot a 621.8 while Anderson shot a 621.7 in the elimination match. Emmons finished fourth in the qualification round with a 626.9 while Anderson finished 25th with 623.0. Emmons finished fourth in the final.

Emmons missed the final of the three position match in Munich by one point with a score of 1,172. Emmons shot a 1,171 during the elimination match. Anderson shot 1,160 in the elimination match and finished 38th in qualifying with a 1,163.

In the Maribor match, Emmons shot a 624.1 in the elimination match while Anderson shot a 618.0. Emmons had the highest score during the qualifying round with a score of 630.0, 2.3 points better than anyone else. Emmons took eighth in the final.

Anderson finished 32nd with a score of 619.6.

Emmons took sixth in the individual final of the three position match in Maribor. Emmons shot a 1,170 in the elimination match before finishing seventh in the qualifying match to advance to the individual final.

Anderson shot a 1,147 in the qualifying match.

Anderson and Maddalena are in Fort Benning, Georgia to shoot at the USA Shooting National Championships, which began on Sunday and runs until June 29. The duo are joined by junior Jaimie Barnes, freshman Kasey Barnes, redshirt sophomore Soren Butler, junior Tim Sherry, junior Lorelie Stanfield and outgoing senior Mike Liuzza.
