Malemutes outshoot Hawks

Led by a strong performance from Kasey Barnes, the Lathrop Malemutes edged the Hutchison Hawks in a Mid Alaska Conference high school rifle match shot last week.

Barnes posted the top scores in both disciplines as the Malemutes won the air rifle portion of the meet 2,196-2,166 and the smallbore event 2,020-2,014.

Barnes shot a 564 out of 600 in air rifle, including a string of a perfect 100 in her fourth round. The rest of the Malemutes were in top form, as well, with Connor Gilman posting a 551, Erik Kirschner notching a 543 and JT Schnering posting a 538.

All of Hutchison’s top shooters also posted scores of 430 or higher. Gabe Stutz led the way with a 554, followed by Roscoe Beadles with a 547, Nathanael Manning with a 534 and Blaze Brooks with a 531.

Barnes had another solid effort in the smallbore event with a 540. JT Schnering added to the winning effort with a 516, Gilman notched a 515 and Kirschner came in at 449.

Manning led Hutchison with a 518, followed by Beadles with a 517, Loden Dunham with a 500 and Stutz with a 449.

Lathrop won the junior varsity air rifle match 2,042-1,887 and the took the smallbore JV match 1,772-1,601.

In an earlier match, Hutchison swept North Pole, winning the air rifle event 2,163-1,961 and the claiming the smallbore competition 2,060-1,740.

Beadles had the top scores for the Hawks with an air rifle score of 552 and a smallbore score of 543.

Joining Beadles on the air rifle squad were Manning with a 545, Stutz with a 543 and Brooks with a 523. In smallbore, Manning added a 524. Stutz had a 401 and Brooks posted a 492.

The North Pole air rifle squad was led by Erika Blanchard with a 525. Brenna Welch shot a 505, Jana Armstrong posted a 481 and Caleb Hall notched a 450.

Welch led the smallbore team with a 500, while Blanchard had a 489, Armstrong registered a 469 and Hall had a 282.

Hutch also swept the junior varsity event with a 1,932-1,640 win in air rifle and a 1,886-1,535 triumph in smallbore.
