School Leader and Teacher Visits

It has been exciting to welcome a number of school leaders and teachers from across the ACT into our classrooms over the past few weeks.

The ACT Education Directorate is encouraging schools to visit Evatt PS as part of its Strong Foundations initiative, and we have been proud to showcase the learning environment and instructional practices at Evatt Primary School. Our consistent approach to explicit teaching, curriculum delivery and classroom practice aligns strongly with the Directorate's Strong Foundations Program.

These visits provide a wonderful opportunity for professional collaboration, with educators sharing ideas, observing effective practice and learning from one another. It has been a privilege to open our doors and highlight the outstanding work of our staff, whose dedication and expertise continue to provide high quality learning experiences for every student.

Thank you to our teachers for so warmly welcoming our visitors and for proudly showcasing the excellent teaching and learning that occurs every day at Evatt.

School Crossing and Parking

We would like to provide an update on the ongoing work to improve the school crossing and parking arrangements at the front of the school.

We continue to work closely with the ACT Government's School Safety and Roads team to develop solutions that will improve safety and traffic flow for our students, families and the wider community.

Planning, design work and consultation are currently taking place behind the scenes. While this process takes time, we are pleased that progress is continuing and will keep our community informed as further updates become available.

Relief Teachers and Continuity of Learning

We would like to provide an update on how we manage teacher absences when staff are away due to illness or other approved leave.

Like all professions, teachers occasionally become unwell or require leave throughout the year. At the same time, schools across Australia continue to experience a national shortage of teachers, making it increasingly difficult to secure replacement staff.

When a relief teacher is unavailable, we may need to temporarily split a class or have students taught by another member of our teaching team. While this is not our preferred option, we carefully plan these arrangements to minimise disruption and ensure students continue to receive high quality teaching and learning.

One of the strengths of our instructional model at Evatt is the consistency of our curriculum, teaching routines and classroom practices. This means that when students are taught by another teacher, they are already familiar with the learning structures and expectations, allowing learning to continue with minimal interruption.

We appreciate our families' understanding and support. Please be assured that, regardless of staffing challenges, our priority remains providing every student with a safe, positive and engaging learning environment every day.

Parents Leaving Morning Lines

To help students transition quickly and calmly into their classrooms, we kindly ask that parents and carers exit the school via the top gates near the Year 5/6 classrooms after morning lines.

This helps keep our internal corridors clear, allowing students to move safely into their learning spaces and ensuring classes can begin as promptly as possible.

Book Week – Coming Up in Week 6!

Book Week is nearly here, and we’re excited to celebrate a full week of reading, imagination and creativity with our students. This year’s festivities will run throughout Week 6, with a range of activities designed to bring stories to life across the school. Celebrating a Love of Reading

Book Week is a wonderful opportunity for students to:

• Explore new stories

• Celebrate favourite characters

• Work creatively with peers

• Build confidence through reading and imagination

Book Week Competitions – Opening Week 5

Our Book Week competitions will open in Week 5, giving students plenty of time to enter before judging. Winners will be announced at the Parade Assembly on Friday 28 August.

Dress Up Parade – Friday 28 August (Week 6)

Our Book Week Dress Up Parade will be held on Friday 28 August. Students are invited to come dressed as a character from any book.

A reminder for families: Costumes do not need to be purchased or complicated. Many beloved book characters wear everyday clothes, and simple, creative ideas are absolutely encouraged. Now is a great time to start thinking about costume options that suit your child and your household.

After the parade, students will join multi age groups for a full day of fun, hands on activities inspired by books and storytelling.

Book Fair – Weeks 7 & 8

The excitement continues with our annual Book Fair, running across Weeks 7 and 8. Families will be able to browse a wide range of books and support our school library.
