Governor General Visit

This week Evatt Primary School has been celebrating National Science Week. Each morning staff have been sharing a range of fun and engaging science experiments with students at morning lines.

Yesterday afternoon, some of our students had a visit from special guest educators - none other than their Excellencies, the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor-General of Australia and Mrs Hurley.

In partnership with Questacon, students were guided through an interactive workshop as part of the 2022 Governor General's Design Challenge. It was an exciting journey of tinkering, experimenting and exploring how light interacts with glass.

Stay tuned on our social media pages for some more sharing of how Evatt has celebrated National Science Week.

BookWeek/BookFair

We are excited that next week is Bookweek at Evatt primary School. The bookfair will be running throughout the week in the library and we will finish the week with our Bookweek dress up day.

We will hold a bookweek parade in the morning followed by a fun multi aged activity rotation that our students will participate in. We are aiming to hold our parade outside at the multi just after 9am should the weather be kind.

Parents and carers are invited to join us for this at 9.00am.

Please see below for further information on Bookweek from our Teacher-Librarian Deb Bultitude.

School Review Next Week

Next week Evatt primary School will be undergoing the school review process. This is where an external panel comes into the school to review the schools progress against the National School Improvement Tool criteria.

We are very proud of our progress of work over the past few years and we also have a lot to work towards and look forward to in the future. This process will share the areas that we as a school are doing well and support us to identify areas to focus on in our next school improvement plan.

Staffing News

Congratulations to Felicity Toohey who has won a substantive School leader C (executive teacher) role at Evatt primary School. Felicity has been acting in the role for a number of years. I know many of our families would agree with me that she has done a great job in a range of executive roles over the years.

Congratulations to Rebecca Swiridziuk who has won the Business Manager's role at our School. Rebecca has played an integral part in many of our school upgrades over the past few years and does a fantastic job in overseeing the business operations.

We are very excited to have Felicity and Rebecca in these permanent positions.

Supporting Anxiety

Please find some information below from our School Psychologist Cheryl Edward regarding managing mental health of children.

"The Child Mind Institute’s Family Resource Center offers hundreds of articles to help families support children who are struggling with mental health, behavior, or learning challenges. Now we’re excited to announce that this same essential information is coming to YouTube, delivered by our expert clinicians straight to your TV, laptop, or mobile device.

You can find the first four videos below, and we’ll be posting new videos weekly on topics from behavior and anxiety to screen time and parenting challenges. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to be the first to know when we release our next video.

  • Social Media and Self-Esteem. Clinical psychologist Kimberly Alexander, PsyD, explains how parents can help kids resist the pressure created by artfully curated social media feeds.

  • 10 Tips for Parenting Anxious Kids. Clinical social worker Grace Berman, LCSW, offers tips for supporting your child without enabling their anxiety.

  • How to Help Children Calm Down. Clinical social worker Alana Cooperman, LCSW, provides techniques for helping kids regulate their emotions and avoid explosive behavior.

  • Is My Child's Anger Normal? Mental health counselor Alnardo Martinez, MS, explains that when outbursts and aggression become a regular occurrence there may be an underlying problem.

If you happen to miss viewing any of the above videos on YouTube, you can find them (and all future videos) on the Child Mind Institute Video Resources web page."

School Psychologist Corner

Parent Bulletin - Cheryl Edward

There is a lot of talk in social media about the increase in anxiety that we are seeing in children. Anxiety-related google searches reached a record high in the early days of covid. There have been reports of increases from 52% to as high as 300% (and if it says it on Facebook, it must be true, right? 😊).

The good news is that with the increase in searches, there is a huge increase in resources available for families to support children who may be showing signs of anxiety. US School Psychologist, Rebecca Branstetter (pictured here), has newsletters, free videos, and tips shared through her FB and Instagram profile: https://rebeccabranstetter.com

Child Mind Institute also have many free resources to help families manage stress in a healthy way, with some great tips on managing stress with mindfulness. When we model our successful strategies to children, we not only support our own management of stress, we help children with their worries. We can encourage them to practice skills that will be a benefit for a lifetime.

A reminder that many resources are also available on the ACT Education website:

https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/resources-for-parents

As with most things, if you are concerned about the symptoms, professional help can be sought through your GP, paediatrician, or an external provider.
