Remembrance Day

This morning at 11am we paused for a minute's silence for Remembrance Day. Shortly before this, our school leaders shared some words to all of the students to build an understanding of the sacrifices that have been made for the freedoms we enjoy today. Our students also had a learning focus in their classrooms on Remembrance Day today. Take the time to discuss this with your children if you get the chance.

A Remembrance Day poem from a student in 3/4

Red. Black. Green. Noise. Pain. Strong.

Brave, soldiers, people who fought for us, people who fought our fights for us, people who held guns for us, people that are represented by poppies. Friends. Family. Bestfriends. These people fought for human kind, these men and women deserved more before they left. Day through night, over and over again. Four years, six years. For some of those people their whole life.

Students Performing At Melba Copland Arts Showcase

Congratulations to the Evatt Primary students who performed at the Melba Copland Arts Showcase last Tuesday. Our students performed a fantastic dance item that by far and away received the loudest applause of the night. Our students were awesome! Thank you to Jo Argaet for her coordination of our dance group throughout the year.

Save the Date - Evatt Fest

We are very excited to announce that we will be holding an outdoor, twilight, end of year concert on Thursday 15 December. All our students preschool to year 6 will be participating in a performance that we are encouraging our families to come and watch.

Evatt Fest will be held on our school oval and more information will be shared over the coming weeks.

Year 5/6 Camp

Our 5/6 students had just the best time at Camp Cooba last week. They participated in a range of activities over the three days and did so well to manage the chilly weather. All of the students showed great respect for themselves and each other and made our school proud. It will be something they remember forever.

A huge thank you to Bronwyn Wilson, Aaron Foy, Peter Frankcom, Mat Middleton and Felicity Toohey who supported our students for the three days.

Family Sustainability Workshop

Thank you to the families who joined our ‘pop up’ Sustainability Workshop on Tuesday Afternoon. SmartSchools ACT helped our families to build an understanding of great waste/resource management at home, similar to how we do it at Evatt Primary School. Check out our story and photos on the Evatt primary School Facebook page

Waste Free Wednesday

Well done to so many students (and thank you families for support at home) for another great waste free Wednesday this week. The momentum of doing this is growing each term and we thank you for your commitment to helping reduce waste here at school. Well done to the students who won our Waste Free Wednesday prizes.

Hats, Sunscreen and Water

It's been refreshing to have some lovely weather this week, finally it has felt much more like Spring. We certainly have enjoyed the break from all the rain we have had recently. A timely reminder about students having hats with their names on them for school. Students are to wear these for break times and during class physical education sessions.

A reminder that sunscreen is available for students to apply when needed throughout the day. Also, don't forget to encourage your children to drink plenty of water.

Evatt bucket hats are available for sale through the P&C uniform store or at the front office for $10 each.

Pupil Free Day

A reminder that the Education Directorate has a second scheduled pupil free day for this term. This will be Monday 28 November. We kindly ask that you please make arrangements for your child(ren) to stay at home on this day.

Students not returning in 2023

If your child or children are moving on from Evatt Primary School for 2023 could you please let the school know. This will help us with our planning for next year. Obviously students in year 6 are excluded from this.

Parent/Carer Requests 2023

Our wonderful Evatt teachers will soon start to prepare class groupings for 2023. If you would like to share something to be considered in relation to your child and their placement in a class, could you please send this to michael.hatswell@ed.act.edu.au

School Psychologist Corner

This week’s resource comes from “Blissful Kids” – a community of 60,000 parents, educators, and therapists.

This website https://blissfulkids.com/ has loads of free resources to empower children with valuable life skills to de-stress, self-regulate, and nurture empathy, kindness, and joy.

The following is an example from one of the free resources:

HOW TO CALM A CHILD IN 5 STEPS

  • Step 1 Show empathy by regulating your own emotions first

  • Step 2 Show positive attention and give them space to handle it if necessary.

  • Step 3 Acknowledge, identify, and name the emotion together (if you can name it, you can tame it!).

  • Step 4 The fourth step in helping a child calm down is to offer a calming solution, like a pre-taught regulation activity, and support your child while they calm down.

  • Step 5 The fifth and final step in calming a child is to address the initial problem together and, if necessary, make amends

As most of you already know, simply telling children to “calm down” will not work because they may not know how to. That’s why it’s important to build these skills when they’re calm, so that they have access to them when they need them the most. As Blissful Kids share:

“slow-paced mindful breathing can help children throughout the day, whether they are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, need to relax or sleep, need to calm their body after exercising, or simply need to pause and reset when they are high energy.”

You can also follow them on FB, Instagram, and Twitter for regular ideas to find something that fits with your family.

If you would like to order something as a surprise please mark the order as a gift and it can be held at the front office for collection by an adult (rather than delivered to the classroom).
