Thank You Evatt Community
A big thank you to our wonderful Evatt Primary School community for your support of our ‘Welcome Community BBQ’ last Wednesday afternoon. It was great to see so many families come along for a sausage, a play and a chat. Thank you to our parents and carers for making the time to connect with our teachers for the beginning of the year getting to know you interviews.
Year 5/6 Camp
Our 5/6 students have had the best time at Camp Borambola this week. They have participated in a range of activities over the three days and did so well to manage with the hot weather.
All of the students showed great respect for themselves and each other and made our school proud. It will be something they remember forever.
A huge thank you to Bronwyn Wilson, Aaron Foy, Peter Frankcom, Karen Owens, James Keeley and Chloe Frost who supported our students for the three days.
Swimming Carnival
Well done to our competitive swimmers who competed at our Swimming Carnival last Friday. Our students swam their hearts out with a number of them swimming times that will qualify them for the regional carnival later this term. Thank you to Ben Sterland and Felicity Toohey for coordinating this.
Hats, Sunscreen and Water
With a few days of very hot weather, it's a timely reminder about students having hats and drink bottles with their names on them for school. Students are to wear hats for break times and during class physical education sessions.
A reminder that sunscreen is available for students to apply when needed throughout the day. Also, don't forget to encourage your children to drink plenty of water.
Lunch Time Bike Club
With the fabulous recent addition of the Dirt Bike Track on our Evatt top oval, we will be running a bike club for students at B1 each Friday starting in Week 5 (03/03/2023). Students who are confident riders will be encouraged to bring their bike to school to join in. Thank you to a number of our parents who have agreed to join our students for a few laps. If you are a parent or carer who would like to come along please email michael.hatswell@ed.act.edu.au
Keep an eye out for more information and permission notes if your child will be interested.
You can see more information about the Bike Skills track on the Abilities Unlimited Australia facebook page.
Thank you Community Partners
The Evatt Primary team would like to share a big shout out to Woolworths Charnwood. They generously support our school each week with groceries and resources to support our students, cooking programs and milk for hot drinks for parents in the Nest. If you are ever in the store, say hello to the friendly staff and let them know you are from Evatt Primary School.
Student Learning Resources (previously known as bookpacks)
During the school holidays we have sourced all of the stationary, supplies and resources required to support your child's learning for 2023. With a goal of keeping costs to a minimum + saving parents and carers time sourcing themselves, we have purchased the supplies in bulk and will provide them to the students as required throughout the year. We have ensured the purchase of high quality resources. Some of these supplies include: workbooks, pencils, pens, textas, glue sticks, scissors, rubbers, sharpeners, rulers, scissors, tissues + a large amount of specific resources required for Art, Science, Technology, Mathematics, Sustainability and Literacy.
We encourage all parents/carers to pay for the learning resource requirements for their child(ren). An amount of $70 per student will cover these costs for the year.

Voluntary Contributions
All ACT Government Schools ask families for the payment of voluntary contributions. These funds are extremely valuable for ensuring that the school can provide an enhanced learning experience for all students. We will continue to prioritise our voluntary contributions to a new PA system for our school hall.
As we did last year in consultation with our School Board, we are not going to put an expected dollar amount on the voluntary contributions.
Previously the contribution was $120 for one child, $220 for two children or $290 for three or more children.
If you nominate your voluntary contribution to the library fund this amount is tax deductible.

Important Reminders
Below are some important reminders that will assist with the running of our school this year.
The Nest Open Hours: The Nest Cafe is open from 8.30am every morning for parents and carers to enjoy a hot barrista made drink and some quality time with your child
Label clothes and belongings: please label all jumpers, jackets, hats, drink bottles and food containers
Allergy friendly school: please ensure your child brings no nuts or nut products to school
Car park: the safety of our students is our top priority. Specific information is shared in this newsletter.
Parking Information
I wanted to draw your attention to the traffic arrangements for dropping and collecting your children. The Kiss and Collect/Drop Zone is on Heydon Crescent, located along the front of the school, between the carpark exit and bottom end of the fence line.
Please read the following important points:
Please be mindful not to turn right out of the school car park during the school hours of 8.30 - 9.30am and 2.30 - 3.30pm.
Please be mindful that cars allowed in the car park are those that have a disabled sticker, staff, or those cars belonging to volunteers working in the school.
If you need to come into the school, there is 15-minute parking outside the preschool, on Heydon Crescent.
No parking in front of the emergency access gate (see photo) – fines may apply.
These requirements are to reduce the likelihood of a serious incident at the start and end of the day.

Digital Wellbeing.
This week, I’ve had some parent enquiries on setting up digital wellbeing habits for their children. It’s never too early to set up good habits for life, setting up limits and boundaries as the technology advancements are moving faster than our research on the impact can keep up. Children now have access to phones, iPads, and social media like never before, and it’s a constant juggle to balance the benefits of education and social connections, against the negative impacts on eye strain, unhealthy eating habits and poor sleep hygiene.
If we’re honest, how many of us put down all technology an hour before bed to ensure we sleep longer and better? I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always put into place the practices that I’m recommending as well as I could! But this is one I strongly encourage parents to set up for their children (and they’ll listen much better if we model the same practice! 😊).
If you’re looking for extra information and tips here are a few of our Australian parenting experts:
Justin Coulson (father of 6 daughters). “Justin not only knows a lot about parenting and positive psychology, but he lives it. He has successfully taught each of his children to sleep in their own beds, wear clothing even when it’s hot, use the bathroom, and eat at least some of the food on their plate most of the time.”
Kristy Goodwin “is one of Australia’s most sought-after digital health, learning and wellbeing experts. She translates the latest neuroscience and technological research into practical advice and simple strategies for parents and educators. Kristy has spoken to thousands of teachers across the country, from early childhood to tertiary level, about the impact of technology on students’ health, wellbeing, and learning. As one of Australia’s digital wellbeing and productivity experts, she shares practical brain-based hacks to tame tech habits”.
