Cross Country

We had a terrific day for our Cross Country Carnival today. All of our students, Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in the run and wonderful house spirit was displayed throughout.

Congratulations to our students who placed in their respective races. These students will represent Evatt at the district cross country carnival next term. A big thank you to all our parents and P&C for the BBQ lunch and to our parents and community members who came along to watch and support their children. Thank you to Ben Sterland for his coordination of the event

District Swimming

On Tuesday 28 March our swimming zone team were in fine form.

Our team was:

All students were so well so supportive of each other and we were very proud of them all. Most students knocked seconds off their personal best and all students finished their races with a smile on their face.

A few of our top results were;

ANZAC Ceremony

On Monday 24 April (first day term two) our school leaders will host our annual ANZAC Ceremony here at Evatt Primary School. During this time our students will learn about and reflect on the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms we enjoy everyday. Parents and carers are invited to join us at 9.00am for this event

Thank you in advance to our school leaders for leading this ceremony.

P&C

Thank you to the parents who attended the first P&C meeting of the year last week. It's great to have an active group of parents working together to support our school community. A reminder that any parent or carer can play a role to support the P&C and our school. Keep an eye out on the P&C communications throughout the year.

School Holiday Break

It's hard to believe we are at the end of Week 9 Term 1 already. School will finish up for the term next Thursday afternoon and we will transition into school holidays. A reminder that school will resume on Monday 24 April followed by a public holiday on Tuesday 25 April for ANZAC Day. We wish our students and families safe and enjoyable school holidays.

Thank you to the many parents who have paid for the 2023 student resources for their child(ren). A reminder that families can organise a payment plan with the front office to pay this off over time. We are more than happy to work through this with you. This can be arranged by calling the school on (02) 6142 1640.

Student Learning Resources (previously known as bookpacks)

During the school holidays we have sourced all of the stationary, supplies and resources required to support your child's learning for 2023. With a goal of keeping costs to a minimum + saving parents and carers time sourcing themselves, we have purchased the supplies in bulk and will provide them to the students as required throughout the year. We have ensured the purchase of high quality resources. Some of these supplies include: workbooks, pencils, pens, textas, glue sticks, scissors, rubbers, sharpeners, rulers, scissors, tissues + a large amount of specific resources required for Art, Science, Technology, Mathematics, Sustainability and Literacy.

We encourage all parents/carers to pay for the learning resource requirements for their child(ren). An amount of $70 per student will cover these costs for the year.

Voluntary Contributions

All ACT Government Schools ask families for the payment of voluntary contributions. These funds are extremely valuable for ensuring that the school can provide an enhanced learning experience for all students. We will continue to prioritise our voluntary contributions to a new PA system for our school hall.

As we did last year in consultation with our School Board,  we are not going to put an expected dollar amount on the voluntary contributions.

Previously the contribution was $120 for one child, $220 for two children or $290 for three or more children.

If you nominate your voluntary contribution to the library fund this amount is tax deductible.

Enrolment information sessions: Children with developmental delay, diverse learning needs and disability

An online session on Wednesday 19 April from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm will provide parents and carers of children with developmental delay, disability, and diverse learning needs with information on the 2024 school year enrolment process and developing a relationship with their child’s next school. The session will be relevant for the enrolment of students from preschool through to college, including specialist school enrolments.

Sessions for parents and carers about supporting school transition will be held in term 3. Parents and carers can register by emailing EDUCommunityPartner@act.gov.au and they should include the school year their child will commence in 2024 (i.e. preschool, Year 9 etc.).

School Psychologist Corner

“Chronic irritability. Grouchy. Moody. Easily frustrated. Annoyed. Short-tempered.”  Does this sound like your child?

“Mental fitness can support a more balanced family and happier home.  MindUP for parents and families can provide you with resources and strategies for finding optimism, building resilience, and creating solutions the entire family can use.”

In a recent discussion on irritability from ADDitude (a website with loads of support for families impacted by ADHD and other common childhood concerns) a few important points have been shared:

There is hope, and there are some evidence-based principles to trial at home:

1. Support practices to feel calm – breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, progressive muscle relaxation

2. Exercise away the hostility

3. Curb electronics

4. Teach that anger is a signal, not an outcome – all feelings are ok, but it’s important to be mindful in our actions

More hints and strategies can be found here:

As always, if symptoms persist, support from a medical or allied health professional is always recommended.  The waitlists for in-person support are lengthy, but there are other options to explore here while you are waiting: https://www.mindmap.act.gov.au/s/

Wishing you many calm and positive moments as you navigate family life.
