Evatt has recently been reviewing its behaviour and wellbeing policies and procedures. The way students behave in school is strongly correlated with their eventual outcomes.
When schools have strong behaviour management processes:
students achieve more academically and socially
time is reclaimed for better and more learning
staff satisfaction improves, retention is higher, recruitment is less problematic
Today we have run two parent information sessions where we shared our vision for behaviour and wellbeing at Evatt. At the core of this is a big lift in behavioural expectations across the school, and strong systems to support students reach them.
One of the common questions we’ve had is for greater clarity on our “hands off” policy. Evatt has always had the “hands off feet off” rule, which can be seen on our Every Day @ Evatt expectation posters around the school. This year we have done some work fine tuning what this means, so there is less confusion for students and staff. As part of this, we’re transitioning to the language “safe hands safe feet”.
We are supporting our students to understand what ‘safe hands and feet’ looks like at Evatt Primary school, particularly during break times.
Appropriate touch during break times looks like:
Touch for communication (high fives, fist bumps, handshakes)
Touch for kindness (helping someone up, comforting someone in need etc.)
A big part of this is teaching students the concept of consent.
Games that involve physical contact are provided to students in a structured way, supported by an adult.
For example, students play dodgeball as part of our Active Play program, soccer during our daily refereed matches and tips as part of our structured tips program that has recently launched.
We will be running two more information sessions next week (04/04), if you would like to attend, please register here: https://forms.gle/8By3wXvBAmP5HwGn8
We are also developing a package for families that further explains the schools vision. This will be available sometime next term.
As always, if you have any questions, please touch base with school leadership who are always happy to sit down and discuss.
Bike Club is now up and running on Thursdays at B1 at Evatt PS. We have more students participating this year than last which is great to see, with their confidence and skills progressing nicely. As well as utilising our fantastic bike skills track, our students have a focus for each week that we work on throughout the session.
If your child can ride and would like to come along every third Thursday and is not enrolled, reach out to our front office for a registration form. Thanks again to parents, Duane and Veronica for their ongoing Bike Club support.
On Tuesday 26 March we had six Evatt Primary students attend Belconnen Zone Swimming Carnival. Well done Zoe, Liam, Taj, Kai, Josh, and Oliver! You did us proud!
On Wednesday we had three teams of students represent Evatt PS at the ACT Futsal Gala Day. With over 90 teams from schools across Canberra participating, it was a fast paced day with each team playing four games against a variety of different schools.
Our students very much enjoyed the opportunity to participate.
Thank you to Ben Ross for coaching a team in the day and to the other parents who came along to support.
Parent Portal is now available. It is a secure online platform used to share student information between you and your child’s teachers.
Some reminders about Parent Portal:
If you already have a Parent Portal account, use this Parent Portal access link to start using the great features.
You can’t access Parent Portal directly through the ACT Digital Account website, you need to use the link above.
When you are logged into Parent Portal, we recommend saving the browser as a favourite or to the homepage on your mobile phone for quick access in the future.
The website can only be viewed using a web browser on your computer, mobile phone or tablet. An app is not available at this time.
If you still need to register, you will need an access key and a Parent Portal registration link via email to link your existing account to your child’s records. If you haven’t received this, please contact the school’s front office team for assistance.
During the school holidays we have sourced all of the stationary, supplies and resources required to support your child's learning for 2024. With a goal of keeping costs to a minimum + saving parents and carers time sourcing themselves, we have purchased the supplies in bulk and will provide them to the students as required throughout the year. We have ensured the purchase of high quality resources. Some of these supplies include: workbooks, pencils, pens, textas, glue sticks, scissors, rubbers, sharpeners, rulers, scissors, tissues + a large amount of specific resources required for Art, Science, Technology, Mathematics, Sustainability and Literacy.
We encourage all parents/carers to pay for the learning resource requirements for their child(ren). An amount of $70 per student will cover these costs for the year.

All ACT Government Schools ask families for the payment of voluntary contributions. These funds are extremely valuable for ensuring that the school can provide an enhanced learning experience for all students. We will continue to prioritise our voluntary contributions to a new PA system for our school hall.
As we did last year in consultation with our School Board, we are not going to put an expected dollar amount on the voluntary contributions.
Previously the contribution was $120 for one child, $220 for two children or $290 for three or more children.
If you nominate your voluntary contribution to the library fund this amount is tax deductible.
Payments can be made by cash, Eftpos at the Front Office, or by Direct Deposit.

Our whole school day is generally within the hours that sun protection is recommended for UV safety.
Please make sure your child has a sun safe hat with their name on their hat.
Last Thursday (14.03.24), Evatt Primary had a school disco. There were both a junior and senior disco. We listened to many songs and danced lots.
You could pay $1 for 3 things from the canteen. Some things including: chips, lollipops, trolli lollies and glow sticks.
Overall, the disco was a blast and we are so thankful for the PNC to provide this fun night for us.

As you may be aware, there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases across ACT public schools in recent weeks.
To help stop the further spread of COVID-19 in our school, we are encouraging and implementing the following measures:
Students who are COVID-19 positive or displaying symptoms (including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever) should test and must not attend school while unwell.
Parents and carers must inform schools if their child is COVID-positive.
Keep up to date with vaccinations.
Families can access a free rapid antigen test (RAT) from the front office of their school. Nasal and saliva tests are available. Test when symptomatic or as a precaution.
Practise good hand and respiratory hygiene.
Distance where possible.
For the latest COVID-19 advice please visit the ACT’s COVID-19 website.
