‘The Evatt Way’ Parent Information Sessions

Yesterday we hosted two parent information sessions to share the what, when, how and why we do things here at Evatt Primary School. It was great to see so many parents and grandparents come along to listen, ask questions and provide feedback. You can find links to our annual school plan and the school improvement plan below. This will give an insight to our priorities and focus areas here at Evatt. We welcome parents to touch base at any time if they would like more information.

Bike Club

Today we ran our second bike club session for the year. Our Year 3/4 students had a fabulous time on the dirt track during Break 1 learning new skills and having fun. We had an overwhelming amount of students keen to participate so we are running in year levels over a number of weeks. Year 5/6 kicked us off last week, 3/4 students this week and Kinder, 1’s and 2’s next week. A big thank you to our parent volunteers Duane Toohey, Anna Bodle, Seymour Savell-Boss and Leah Karszniewicz who are supporting this program.

Parents are more than welcome to join us on a Friday 11.15am - 12.00pm for a ride.

Special Lunch Order Pi(e) Day

Thank you to our P&C for celebrating Pi Day (3.14159) with a special pie lunch order day this week. This was very popular with our students not to mention a great learning opportunity.

Thank you to the Evatt Bakery for their support of this event.

Preschool Rock & Roll Party

Our Green Preschool group had a great start to Wednesday morning with a pop-up rock and roll party. This was enjoyed by our students and their parents with the idea being generated by the students themselves. Thank you to the many families who took some time out to come along on Wednesday morning. We look forward to the Blue Group community event next term.

P&C Meeting Next Week

A reminder that our P&C will be holding its first meeting for 2023 next Thursday 6.00pm - 7.30pm in the Nest. I encourage parents and carers to support the P&C, become involved and continue to help strengthen our great school. I look forward to seeing you there.

Student Learning Resources (previously known as bookpacks)

During the school holidays we have sourced all of the stationary, supplies and resources required to support your child's learning for 2023. With a goal of keeping costs to a minimum + saving parents and carers time sourcing themselves, we have purchased the supplies in bulk and will provide them to the students as required throughout the year. We have ensured the purchase of high quality resources. Some of these supplies include: workbooks, pencils, pens, textas, glue sticks, scissors, rubbers, sharpeners, rulers, scissors, tissues + a large amount of specific resources required for Art, Science, Technology, Mathematics, Sustainability and Literacy.

We encourage all parents/carers to pay for the learning resource requirements for their child(ren). An amount of $70 per student will cover these costs for the year.

Voluntary Contributions

All ACT Government Schools ask families for the payment of voluntary contributions. These funds are extremely valuable for ensuring that the school can provide an enhanced learning experience for all students. We will continue to prioritise our voluntary contributions to a new PA system for our school hall.

As we did last year in consultation with our School Board,  we are not going to put an expected dollar amount on the voluntary contributions.

Previously the contribution was $120 for one child, $220 for two children or $290 for three or more children.

If you nominate your voluntary contribution to the library fund this amount is tax deductible.

MindUP

“Mental fitness can support a more balanced family and happier home.  MindUP for parents and families can provide you with resources and strategies for finding optimism, building resilience, and creating solutions the entire family can use.”

We are delivering MindUP lessons at Evatt, teaching students about their brain and building strategies to help manage anxiety and stress.  You may notice your child talking about their PFC (Tex = prefrontal cortex), amygdala (Amy, the superhero who keeps them safe), or hippocampus (Po – who helps with memories).

They’ll also be learning about the power of gratitude, perspective taking, and optimism, and how to build these skills into daily activities. Families can support at home by using the same language, practicing gratitude at the family meal, or just connecting with each other through mindful moments.

Mindfulness doesn’t have to be a passive, lying still and quiet activity.  Active mindfulness is often something that young children find easier, taking a mindful moment to notice the sensations while brushing their teeth, walking through the house, noticing all the different sounds, or by taking 3 deliberate deep breaths to bring calm and reduce stress.

The great news is that all these activities can be really helpful for adults too – bringing calm into chaos, or just easing some of the stress of life today.

If you’d like to more, you might like to reach out to your teacher for some resources or check out the MindUP website: https://mindup.org/mindup-for-families/

Wishing you many mindful moments to support joy in your home 😊.
