Week Nine:
Year 6 Graduation - Wednesday 7 December
Year 6 Grad. Dinner - Wednesday 7 December
5/6 Grad. Disco - Wednesday 7 December
Week Ten:
End of Year Concert - Thursday 15 December (evening)
Congratulations to our Yr5 and Yr6 Bands who beautifully performed at the end of year Crescendo Concert yesterday. Both bands played a lovely repertoire of songs and then came together at the end to perform a couple of show stopper items. It was fantastic to see so many parents and members of our community come to the school to enjoy the music.
Thank you to both Rachel Allen and Bronwyn Wilson for their outstanding tuition for our band students in 2023.
We are very excited to see the development of a dirt bike skills track being developed and built on the oval next to Evatt Primary School. This will be a great addition to our community that we will use regularly with our students. We will also be actively encouraging our community to get on the track and have a ride.
Next year we'll be running a lunchtime bike club with our students so keep an eye out for this information early next year. We are also looking for parents who would like to come along to our weekly bike club to join our students for a ride on the track.
If you are interested in this, please email michael.hatswell@ed.act.edu.au to let me know.
Our end-of-year celebration will be held on December 15 from 5:00 - 7:00pm. It will be an informal, outdoor event where classes and year levels across the school will perform a dance or music item for our community.
Families are invited to bring along a picnic rug, set out on the grass, and enjoy an evening together as a community.
A reminder that this coming Monday (28/11/22) is a Pupil Free Day. Students are asked to stay home on this day.
If for any reason your child is required to attend school, please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/hzANNTkXWodzWS8G6
Over the coming weeks, we will be organising our classes ready for 2023. Due to fluctuating enrollment numbers, we have made the decision to have composite classes in 2023 for our Years 1-6 (Kindergarten to remain single-year classes). This will consist of 4 x 1/2 classes, 3 x 3/4 classes, and 3 x 5/6 classes in addition to our Disability Education Program.
We have done significant work over the past few years building robust curriculum and social structures and systems that will make this transition seamless. If you have any questions or concerns about what this looks like, please touch base via Seesaw or email.
Classes and teachers will be shared in Week 10 via Seesaw.
Our Semester Two reports will be emailed to parents and carers on Friday Week 9 (09/12/2023). A reminder that teachers will be providing feedback against the achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum across a range of learning areas.
As shared by the Education Directorate there will be no comments attached in the reports.
Connecting to Calm…
Another chat this week about how to bring more calm and connection to your home. Dan Siegel is a world-renowned Clinical Professor, award-winning educator, and author of many books. He specialises in interpersonal neurobiology and coined the term “mindsight”, along with “if you can name it, you can tame it”, and “flipping your lid”. He uses neuroscience to teach families, educators, and young people strategies to ‘rewire the brain’ to support responding to events, rather than reacting.
Dan’s work in “mindsight” aims to help people understand the brain’s role in recognising and regulating emotions and gaining control to improve our social and emotional wellbeing. For example, Siegel emphasizes the difference between saying, “I am sad” and “I feel sad.” The latter empowers us to see our emotions as temporary feelings over which we can gain control rather than overwhelming sensations that may leave us feeling depleted.
He has also presented on how to use the same hemisphere to connect and communicate, meeting our young people where they are. As parents we often want to rush in and solve a problem our child or adolescent might be sharing with us. Dan demonstrates here in this quick video, how we can hold off on the solving and focus on the connection: Connecting to Calm. He makes it look very simple, but it does take practice, as with anything worthwhile 😊.
For parents who are supporting their young people preparing for high school, Dan has several resources that can support families in this journey: Dan Siegel’s books. You may also be interested in his video clip on “The Adolescent Brain”. In this video clip, Dan discusses some of the myths about the adolescent brain and how to support them as they navigate the many challenges they face along the way.
I hope you are all having a good term, as we continue working towards the end of the school year.
