Well done to our year 5/6 students who ran a wonderful Market Day today. All of the students at Evatt Primary School had a fantastic time making their way around the different stalls and enjoying the activities on offer.
This day was designed and run in conjunction with the year 5/6 HASS Economics unit of work. Our students have loved the hands-on approach to their learning.
We felt very proud to host the ACT Minister for Education, Yvette Berry here at Evatt PS on Wednesday to launch the new funding package through Strong Foundations.
The Minister spent the majority of her time in KHL where she observed an explicit phonics lesson and interacted with the students. This was followed by a press conference on school grounds.
We also enjoy having the Minister visit and showcasing our school.
Evatt Primary School invites all families—current and new—to join us on Thursday, 21 November 2024, for our presentation of 'The Evatt Way' as we prepare for an exciting 2025 school year. This session will provide an overview of our approach to teaching and learning at Evatt, with additional information tailored specifically for families of 2025 Kindergarten students. Over the past year, we've introduced several new strategies to enhance our learning environment, and we look forward to sharing these with you.
The presentation will be held in our school library from 5:00 to 5:30 pm, followed by a Q&A session. We hope you can join us to learn more about the unique educational experience we offer at Evatt. There will also be an opportunity to look at uniform sizes and make orders for the 2025 school year.
This morning at our Friday assembly we were extremely fortunate to receive a donation of 4 x GT Stomper Mountain Bikes. These were generously donated to our P&C by Handlebar Canberra as part of our Stomp the Grounds Fundraiser which they ran at the end of last term.
These bikes will be a great asset in supporting our bike education program and no doubt will be doing many laps on our dirt skills track and new learn to ride path.
You can have a look at what Handlebar Canberra offers here https://www.handlebarstromlo.com.au/
A big thanks to Jan Peffer from the P&C for her coordination of this donation.

A reminder about the importance of having your children at school for morning lines everyday. This is where we share important messages about the day and what's coming up later in the week. Straight after this, students head into their classrooms and start learning immediately with their teacher. If your child is 15 mins late each day that adds up to over 8 days of missed learning over the course of a year!
Our wonderful Evatt teachers will soon start to prepare class groupings for 2025. If you would like to share something to be considered in relation to your child and their placement in a class, could you please send this to michael.hatswell@ed.act.edu.au
We have an exciting and busy term ahead at Evatt Primary School. Please see attached many of the events planned for this term so you can put the dates into your diaries.
It's great to see nearly all students with hats for playtime & PE. Please make sure your child has a sun safe hat with their name on their hat.

As part of the Strong Foundations reform program, ACT public schools will begin a phased introduction of the Year 1 Phonics Check starting with 26 schools this term.
The Phonics Check is a quick and easy way for teachers to gauge the phonics knowledge of Year 1 students. It is designed to help teachers identify students who may need more help learning to read.
The first schools selected to participate were chosen based on demographic, location and size to provide a broad sample from across the ACT public school system. Insights from this first group of schools will inform a rollout of the Year 1 Phonics Check to our school and all ACT public schools in 2025.
This is an important milestone as part of the Strong Foundations program designed to strengthen literacy and numeracy outcomes for all students. You can read more on the Education Directorate website.
Enrolments for the 2025 school year are now open for students starting at a new school. Visit www.education.act.gov.au for the online application link and information about the school in your child’s Priority Enrolment Area. Apply by 7 June to receive an offer from 29 July 2024.
