EXECUTIVE NEWS WITH LOUISE

Minister’s Student Congress

On 28 May our school leaders, Ingrid and Hamish, attended the Minister’s Student Congress, where student leaders met to discuss what respect looks like at their school.

The Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Yvette Berry, took the opportunity to speak with students about their exploration of the Congress theme Creating Respectful School Environments.

Students were able to chat to Minister Berry and representatives from the Directorate about their ideas for making change in the school system. Read their student report below.

Reconciliation Week Community Breakfast

A huge thank you to our community for attending our Reconciliation Week Breakfast last Friday. There was a great turn out with many families consuming and enjoying over 1000 wattleseed pikelets with lemon myrtle syrup, and drinking peppermint gum tea! The tea leaves were given to us by Dhani and Lauren, staff from Mulligans Flat, who had been in to talk to the year 4 students about how the Aboriginal people used the land and previously shared some peppermint tea with the children.

Check out the pikelet recipe on our Facebook page and if you haven’t watched the video yet, I highly recommend it as you can get a feel of the great community spirit. Parents also took the opportunity to read some of our wonderful new Indigenous picture books with their children. This helps to celebrate and build our understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Find the video on our Facebook, here.

Reports and Interviews

In week 9, reports will be sent home to provide feedback on how your child is performing at school this year. In mainstream classes, they will be marked against the Achievement Standards for their year level. It is part of our reporting process to parents and carers and an opportunity for you to see what they have achieved so far this year.

We will give you another opportunity to discuss your child with the classroom teachers and have a future focus discussion through the interviews. These may be three-way interviews with your child if you prefer. Parent and school partnerships are essential for ensuring that each child is catered for.

We ask you to be receptive to this partnership, so keep an eye out for further information about the interviews. Some will be available on Thursday 17 June, the same night as the P & C disco so you will be able to combine the two things. The booking schedule and information will be sent out soon.

Voluntary Contributions and Book Packs

At the beginning of the year all families were given information about 2021 book packs and voluntary contributions. Thank you to the families who have already made any payments towards these things. So far, we have received $9635 towards our voluntary contribution fund and only 35% of students have paid for their book packs.

Even though we are halfway through the year it is not too late to make a payment.

The students are still using the quality resources that we have sourced that they need for their educational experiences. We need to replenish these consumables consistently throughout the year.

As a reminder, the voluntary contribution’s goal this year will be for our much-anticipated PA system in the hall. We are closer than ever to getting our new hall air conditioning and soundproofing and when this goal is reached it will be ‘the icing on the cake’.

Belconnen Cross Country

Last Wednesday about 40 primary students represented Evatt Primary at the Belconnen Cross Country. Mrs Toohey and Mr Sterland were proud of the enthusiasm, respect and tenacity that the students demonstrated.

Congratulations to the four students, Abbey, Lily, Alana, and Zac, who will now continue to the ACT regional division.

Sullivan Shield Rugby League

Another opportunity for students to show their sportsmanship, persistence and resilience was seen at the North Canberra rugby league competition. On Tuesday the 1st of June, James and Mr. Foy took the Year 5/6’s to participate in the Sullivan’s Shield in Nicholls.

The Evatt Eagles soared against various schools from across Canberra and enjoyed the day on a whole. It was great to see a mix of boys and girls engage in a non-competitive arena to show off their rugby league skills. Both James and Aaron enjoyed an excellent day and are proud of the effort displayed by our fantastic Evatt students.

We look forward to the Evatt Eagles participating in this event again next year!

Rug up for the weekend and enjoy family time.

Louise Frawley,

P- 2 Executive Teacher.

EDUCATION DIRECTORATE IMMERSION VISIT

Last Wednesday the Belconnen Network Director of School Improvement, Kris Willis, along with personnel from the Education Support Office attended Evatt Primary School for an Immersion Visit.

This visit focused on how we as teachers are continuing to collaborate with each other as we continue to learn and improve our capacity to guide and facilitate student learning. In addition to this, they spent some time in every classroom across the school talking to students about their learning.

Some of the feedback from the visit included;

The visiting group observed students from K-6. All students observed were actively engaged in quality learning tasks.

The 5 senior school students who were interviewed could articulate what they were learning about and the purpose for this learning.

The 8 students who were interviewed from years 2-6 articulated that they speak to their teacher or a peer if they would like help with their learning.

The school has invested in providing new conferencing tables in all classrooms to support teachers to confer and work with individuals and small groups of students.

All teachers were engaging in positive interactions with students and colleagues.

Teachers take pride in establishing inviting learning environments.

The school has been establishing a positive culture of learning: students in class learning, teachers feeling safe and supported. The school has made incredible gains in this area which was made evident throughout the walk through.

Michael Hatswell.

STUDENT REPORT OF CHIEF MINISTER'S STUDENT CONGRESS

On Friday, we went to Canberra College and participated in this semester's Student Minister Congress meeting. Our topic of the day was respect, and we did several activities about what we think is respect. One of our activities was getting images and discussing our thoughts on how the images could represent respect such as Uluru, classroom situations and environmental scenarios. This helped us see that respect comes in many forms and people will see it differently.

We sat at a table with another school and discussed our ideas on what respect is, which made us feel like we had a voice in what was happening. One of the biggest things that stood out was how many schools and students there were, from some of the littlest of ages to some of the oldest. After our delicious lunch, Minister Berry came and talked with us and gave a speech about her views on respect and how much she values the students present at the congress.

Overall, it was a really fun experience and helped us see the different ways of respect.

Ingrid and Hamish.
