Insight from a GDC First Timer
ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO SHOW YOUR WORK!! -Wednesday
On my first day there, I decided to go to the Career Floor. The Career Floor wasn't as scary and full as people told, it was fun to get to know the companies from a hello I'm right in front of you than from a read my email point of view. So I went to talk to High Voltage, since their booth was the biggest one and I had no idea what they did, which I basically had a long conversation because of it and I'm certain she will remember me, since she later told me I should apply. After Voltage, I went and talked to Avalanche Studios, due to the line being long, I was brought to the side with 2 other guys, to the VFX artist, but also one of the top recruiters in their New York Branch, He was impressed with my work and that i was prepared to talk to him, because the other two didn't even have a portfolio and were bombarding him with questions. After talking to him, after the first guy ended. he immediately told me to apply and to write that I talked to him. Take away, ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO TALK TO ANYONE. Also I went to talk to Imangi and as soon as i finished showing him my work he invited me to drink beer with the team the next day, and they really liked my work.
Dolby Atmos is the future for surround sound in games -Thursday
At GDC, there was at least 3 Dolby booth showcasing the Atmos Technology. Atmos Premiered in June 2012 with Disney's Brave, but only just recently it started to be used by game companies. In games its only been recent and reserved to Dice's Star Wars Battlefront and on Blizzard's Overwatch. What Atmos does it bounces the sound from a speaker against walls to that it can reach the back, top and back of the audience making it sort of like a dome of sound. It also allows for the companies to make the player feel like they are in this environments at least sound wise and It also allows them to play more with the sound design and how they want it to sound like.
VR is the latest toy -Friday
V.R. was everywhere and used by everyone, from well known companies like Epic and Unity to basically anyone else. I went around and tried to do different demos on V.R., like an Archer one, a space fighter guy where you control the ship with your head and also shoot with it and also a project that you literally can fly with your whole body, because of a contraption you lay on and the v.r. Also eye following technology was really big, used by Intel on the Division.
