Yoji Shinkawa was born in Hiroshima, Japan. He joined Konami in 1994 at the age of 22. His first assignment was for Policenauts as a CG art director. Later, he moved on to work as the character designer for the Metal Gear Solid Series, as well as the mech designer for the Zone of the Enders series.
Yoji Shinkawa style is that of a technical and accurate portrayal of people and objects in his illustrations, which has earned him fame. He was the first person at Konami to earn an S-grade review on his portfolio which lead him to begin the character and concept artist for the Metal Gear Soild series. Yoji doesn't really consider himself as anything but a character designer and has been inspired by other artists such as Yoshitaka Amano, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Mœbius, and Frank Miller. As Yoji continued on with designs for each installment for the Metal Gear Solid series, he happened to be given the role of mech design for the Zone of the Enders by chance. He showed Hideo Kojima some of his early mech designs and as a result, was given the job of mech design.
