Derek Yu hails from the city of Pasadena, California. As a child he developed a life long passion for video games. Upon graduating from the University of California, Berkley, with degrees in computer science, he took a year off to way his career options. Yu's earliest work are Spelunky, I'm O.K, Eternal Daughter, Mean Cuisine, Diabolika 2, and Aquaria, which was the winner of the Seumas McNally grand prize at the 2007 Independent Game Festival.
Most of Yu's work are action adventure and reflects his own unique visual style. One of the most important aspects Yu emphasizes in his games is smooth game play. Yu believes that game play should come before game art, and to combine the two, exemplifies a great game.
