Summary: Released in 2006, The Playstation 3 was the most powerful system of it's generation of console wars. Although it had a rocky start, the release of smaller and more cost effective versions allowed it to compete with the other systems.
The Playstation 3 was released in 2006 six years after the Playstation 2 which was released in 2000. It was released with an option for a 60GB($599) PS3 with multiple memory card readers and built in wifi capabilities or a 20GB($499) version which is $100 less and has none of the options mentioned before. The release was met with long lines and little Playstation 3 Systems due to shortage of systems in the United States Release, while in Japan they sat idle in large stacks. The problem with Sony not reaching it's shipping quota impacted knowing how much the first days of sales actually yielded. The cost of the Playstation 3 was the major reason for the low sales of the system on the opening day. Another problem that hindered the sales were the release games that came out with the system. Although launch titles like Resistance Fall of Man was popular, they were few in number and lacking in options compared to some of the other system's launch titles.
In 2009, after 3 years and 7 versions of the system's below average sales, Sony released the Playstation 3 slim. A smaller and more efficient system, that was less costly and used less power altogether. The sales instantly started to pick up when the starting price was set for $299 and $349.
