Shi Kai Wang became interested in art very early on in his life. He attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he received a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design. During his time there, he became interested in video games and was a part of an upstart PC gaming company called Mobeus Design that a friend of a friend of his had put together. While working there he was solely a concept artist and used his work to build up his portfolio. Upon graduating he applied for jobs at both FASA and Bungie Studios. He was hired by Bungie, where he still works to this day. He holds the position of Lead 3D Artist and enjoys his job and working with everyone at Bungie very much so. He has earned the Bungie rank of Grizzled Ancient for his time spent working for the studio.
Shi Kai has worked at Bungie Studios since 1998 as Concept Artist and Lead 3D Artist on multiple games. These games include Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, and most recently, Halo Reach.
His influence has come from many different places and people. In an interview with Brad Gallaway on GameCritics.com, Shi Kai said the following.
"As for influences in art, I've grown up on anime and that had a very direct influence to what I created. I'm not nearly as inspired by anime now as I was, but I still appreciate it. To name a few artists that I was influenced by: Katsuhiro Otomo, Masamune Shirow, YAS, Akira Toriyama, Miyazaki. Current artists that I think are awesome: Craig Mullins, Sparth, Bengal, Katsuya Terada, Nirasawa, and Niheii."
