My main goal at this GDC was to find a job so I spent as much time as I could showing my work and trying to meet as many people as possible. This was also the 1st year I bought an all access pass and all of the talks I attended were mind blowing! Whenever I had a chance to stick around the career pavilion I did, to meet people from as many companies as possible.
Job Seeking Advice:
Career Pavilion:
There seemed to be a lot less companies at the career pavilion this year. In the past years that I've been to GDC there was a lot more. I heard from some people that they were creeping around to look at GDC passes hanging from peoples necks just to find what companies they were from.
GDC Parties:
I met more people at parties then on the career floor. At the Epic party the 1st night I met the CEO of Trion Games, Scott Hartsman, he seemed to be very interested in my thesis because it is similar to the game they are currently working on and wanted me to send an email of my work to him. Later, I received substantial critique from Lead Animator of Epic Mathew Russel and a Character Artist from Epic. Met a bunch of people the second night from Telltale and the CEO of 505 games.
Ringling Booth:
Also, something I realized the last day is that the Ringling Booth is a great place to hang around because the people there are interested in the student work. I wish I stuck around there earlier in the week. I stayed the last remaining couple hours of GDC at the Ringling booth and got offered an Art Test from a smaller company and met the VP of Turbine.
After GDC at the Chinese Festival I met up with Orsi Wells (Ringling Graduate) who is working on “The Witness” with Jonathan Blow and two people from Cyan Games who recently made Myst.
Attached are the Notes from the talks I attended.
Overall it was a successful GDC!
