DES300: Level 3 Design
Course Description
At Level 3, Design students will consolidate practical design skills and work towards an independent study in design through research and idea development in response to established design practice. Students will communicate ideas visually using contemporary design techniques and digital design technology with more proficiency. Idea development becomes more streamlined and builds on the skills and knowledge acquired at Level 2 as students work to complete a three board portfolio.
Topics covered: Logo design - Product design - Digital design - Photography - Research and response - Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop - Elements and principles of design - branding / visual identity - Promotion - Typeface design- Merchandise design - Portfolio presentation.
Developing Skills In: Solutions based problem solving, Critical Thinking and analysis. Creativity and digital proficiency in industry standard software. Preparation for Tertiary studies / Industry.

Assessment
2x Internals (8 credits) 1x External (14 credits) = 22 credits
Level 3 Design is a University Entrance Subject. A course endorsement will be available to students who attain Merit or Excellence grades for 14 or more credits, with at least one external assessment at that grade.
Scholarship is available in this subject.
Research-based and Finished Project standards are also available for students wanting to expand upon their critical, contextual and presentation skills or gain extra credits
Career paths
Level 3 Design prepares students for university and/or industry, also for many creative career paths: Fine Arts, Photography, Design, FX, Animation and Film, Gallery and Museum Curator, Advertising, Education and more. It also teaches students many transferable soft skills valued in the ever changing workplace.
Course contributions
Students are asked to contribute $35 towards the cost of a design pack, a memory stick & use of the Adobe suite which assists with learning in class & on student’s own laptops. At the end of the rotation, students are free to keep the supplies.
