A suggested approach to course selection:
Step1
Think about your abilities, strengths and interests. Write down the subjects you enjoy and achieve well in.
List any possible learning or career pathways.
Discuss this with your whānau and Tutor teacher. Go through any careers tasks or presentations provided by your tutor teacher.
Step 2
Read the information on this site carefully.
Make a note of possible subject choices as you read about them.
Check you meet or are likely to meet any pre-requisites for courses.
Step 3
Talk to your current subject teachers and department teachers.
Ask them if they think you will be able to meet the requirement for next year if you continue with the subject.
Ask them if they would recommend that you continue with the subject.
Step 4
Find out more information about any requirements for careers. For example students need CHE300, MAT302, and PHY300 for Engineering at Universities of Auckland and Canterbury.
You can make an appointment with the Careers Counsellor (Mr Tait) to help you with this.
Step 5
Talk with Tutors, Heads of Department/Teachers in Charge of subjects, Deans, Ms Heath & Mrs Kurton (Careers Department) for further guidance.
Talk with your parents/caregivers about your subject choices.
Step 6
Reflect on the following questions:
Do the subjects you have chosen allow you to continue with possible subject choices in subsequent years?
Do the subjects you have chosen keep career pathways open to you?
Do the subjects you have chosen enable you to gain entry to tertiary study or the pathways you want to explore?
Step 7
