FAQ
Q. What courses are compulsory?
A. All students will complete the 9PEW course in year 9, and the 10PEW course in year 10. All other classes are opt-in subjects.
Q. What's the difference between Academic Athletic Development (AAD200. AAD300) and Physical Education (PED200, PED300)?
A. The PED pathway is for students looking to gain practical, vocational skills in the physical activity and recreation field, so they may leave school and move straight into potential employment in this area. The AAD pathway is for students looking to set themselves up for further study in this area (university, polytec etc) to gain further qualifications for more specialised career options. See the PEHFAN pathways infographic for careers each pathway might lead to.
Q. Can I do both PED and AAD?
A. Yes - However keep in mind there will be some crossover in the standards offered at NCEA level 2 and NCEA level 3, and you can only gain each standard once. In addition, consider that by specialising your timetable with two subjects from one domain, you are closing off another potential pathway subject that you could have been doing.
Q. Are we doing real PE today?
A. Every PE class is a real PE class, whether that's learning in the classroom or the gymnasium.
Q. Which Level 3 subjects can help me gain university Entrance?
A. AAD300, PED300 and FAN300 all meet the requirements of NZ University entrance approved subjects, and help you develop skills and knowledge to set you up for future study.
Q. Can you study Food and Nutrition and PE as 2 separate subjects?
A. Yes at Level 1, 2 and 3. They teach from the same curriculum area and use the same underlying concepts but the context is obviously different. If you are highly interested in a pathway involving the body in health, physical activity and performance then the 2 subjects give a greater breadth of understanding, and the interrelationships between both.
Q. Is Food and Nutrition about cooking and eating?
A. Not at all. Students use food as a context for their learning and some food may be eaten after they have completed their learning. It is not a good idea to expect to cook and eat every period as this will not occur. Food and Nutrition is an academic subject just as other subjects in the school are e.g English
Q. What is the difference between Food and Nutrition and Hospitality?
A. Food and Nutrition is an academic subject that will give you UE. Hospitality is a unit standard course that does not have the academic rigour of Food and Nutrition. In Hospitality you will learn and practice skills that can be used to prepare and serve food and open doors to the global hospitality industry.
Q. Can you study both Food and Nutrition and Hospitality?
A. Yes, you may have the same teacher for both subjects but the content and way the class is taught will be totally different. In Hospitality, stamina and commitment to the Hospitality industry is expected. It is not about cooking and eating but preparing and serving food like you would be serving food to others.
