Course Description
Media Studies examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities, and cultures, and how media products are produced, controlled, and distributed. The course develops critical thinking skills and students learn to analyse how media products are constructed to make media enjoyable, entertaining, persuasive, and powerful. Students will apply their critical thinking and formal writing skills to the analysis and production of a range of media texts.
Topics covered:
Media products include newspapers, online publications, blogs, film, television, radio, and podcasts.
Academic theories and how they relate to the media
Researching, interviewing, writing, and designing a feature magazine article.
The relationship between a specific media form and its target audience
Different impacts (including social, cultural, political, historical, economic, technological, or ideological factors) on an aspect of a media industry
How relationships between a media genre and society are formed and the impact these have on society.
Media representation of an aspect of New Zealand culture or society
Recommendation for subject entry
10 credits in Level 2 NCEA Media Studies or by HOD approval
Assessment
Assessment will include a combination of internal and external achievement standards in this 19 credit course:
