Course Description
Media Studies examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities, and cultures, and how media products are produced, controlled, and distributed. The course develops critical thinking skills and students learn to analyse how media products are constructed to make media enjoyable, entertaining, persuasive, and powerful.
Topics covered:
Media products, including newspapers, online publications, blogs, film, television, radio, and podcasts.
Genre and the codes and conventions associated with them
Advertising - design a campaign that markets to a target audience
Feature magazine article design, research and writing
Recommendation for subject entry
At least 10 credits in Level 1 English
Assessment
Assessment will include a combination of internal and external achievement standards in this 19 credit course:
2.3 Representation in the Media - (3cr) INT
2.5 Produce a design for a media product - (4cr) INT
2.6 Complete a media product from a design - (6cr) INT
2.7 Demonstrate understanding of an ethical issue in the media - (3cr) INT
2.1 Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between a media product and its audience - (3cr) EXT
