10PAC: Year 10 Pacific Studies

Course Description
This course will have a strong emphasis on geography while developing a social studies skillset. Students will research a range of Pacific Nations in their geographical and indigenous nature. Social issues specific to that region will then be explored along with some current events that affect that region.
Students will also learn about various Pacific societies' indigenous knowledge, along with some language components.
Students will learn a range of skills, such as planning, collating, recording, summarising, and researching information from various sources. They will also be encouraged to engage with a variety of text types, including written, visual, and oral texts.
Topics within Pasifika Studies will include:
Pre-European, Early Settlers of the Pacific, Missionaries Arrival, Early gods or te atua, Traditional Dances, Indigenous lifestyle, Village Life, Traditional Foods, Traditional Beliefs, Traditional Sports, Christianity, Explorers and Traders, Myths and Legends, Traditional Cultures.
Recommendation for subject entry
All students including those with non-Pasifika background are invited to take this course. An interest in learning about the South Pacific is all that is required.
Assessment
Writing and Reading, Research topic and skills, research analysis, presentations. Analysing maps and interpreting that information. Data analysis and interpretation.
Next steps
This course leads to a Year 11 Pacific Studies course doing unit and achievement standards. Fluent Pasifika speakers will also be offered the opportunity to sit some NCEA Pasifika Language achievement standards.
