CHE200: Level 2 Chemistry

Head of Department:

Mrs Isabella Thompson

Teacher in Charge:

Mr Samuel Coleman

Course Description

This course develops students' understanding of chemical processes and environmental issues. An emphasis on practical work develops laboratory and research techniques as well as supporting theoretical ideas. For more information go to the Science Department Website

Topics Covered

Chemical bonding, structure and energy changes (EXT): 5 Explore how bonding, structure, and properties shape the substances around us. You'll look at concepts like energy changes in reactions and learn to use essential chemistry vocabulary to describe and analyse these fundamental connections.

Properties of selected organic compounds (EXT) 4 Explore the dynamic world of organic chemistry by mastering the structural formulas of a variety of compounds, from alkanes to carboxylic acids. You'll connect structure and functional groups to their properties, using essential chemistry language to dive deep into exciting reactions and transformations.

Quantitative Analysis (INT) 4 Embark on an exciting practical investigation by analysing a substance in a consumer product using quantitative methods! You'll design effective experiments, collect and process data, and apply your chemistry skills to accurately determine concentrations while understanding the impact of your modifications on the investigation's success.

Identification of ions (INT) 3 Dive into the world of qualitative analysis by investigating chemical species in a sample through hands-on identification procedures! You'll gather and analyse data to link chemical species to their compounds while exploring their significance for people and the environment, enhancing your understanding of real-world chemistry.

Investigating oxidation and reduction (INT) 3 Explore the fascinating world of oxidation-reduction reactions by learning to identify, describe, and balance these dynamic processes! You’ll connect observations with equations using essential chemistry vocabulary, enhancing your understanding of how electron transfer shapes chemical reactions.

Chemical Reactivity (EXT) 4 Dive into the exciting realm of chemical reactivity by exploring how different factors influence reaction rates and equilibrium principles! You’ll develop your skills in using chemistry vocabulary to explain and analyse these concepts, setting the stage for deeper understanding of the dynamic nature of reactions.
