MUS300: Level 3 Performance Music / Pūoro

Course Description
This is a mixed level class from Yr 11 - 13 focused on the skills used for the performance of music rooted in theoretical knowledge through the analysis of music skills and styles. Across the three levels the focus of this course will be to gain as much experience in different performance situations to work on stagecraft alongside personal development as a musician on your chosen instrument. To ensure a solid foundation, performers need to work on understanding and expressing music based on its context for creation.
Topics covered:
Advanced Performance – solo and group plus second instrument where applicable
Aural – playing by ear and transcription
Researching and analyzing music to understand context influences
Improvisation Skills on chosen instrument (which can lead to composition)
Develop knowledge of different instruments to inform skills development.
Recommendation for subject entry
Play an instrument for at least 2/3/4 years (dependant on level of study) either through the itinerant scheme or with a private tutor
Have taken either Yr 10 music course.

Assessment
Students will work at the level that is suited to their ability by working through the compulsory standards for each level along with self selected standards to make up a full course.

3.1 AS91416 Perform two programmes of music as a featured soloist. 8 Credits Internal

3.5 AS91420 Integrate aural skills into written representation. 4 Credits External
3.6 AS91421 Demonstrate understanding of harmonic and tonal conventions in a range of music scores. 4 Credits External
3.7 AS91422 Analyse a substantial music work. 4 Credits Internal
3.8 AS91423 Examine the influence of context on a substantial music work. 4 Credits External
3.9 AS91424 Create two arrangements for an ensemble. 4 Credits Internal
3.10 AS91425 Research a music topic. 6 Credits Internal
