Course Description
In this course, students will add to the geographic skills and concepts developed at Level 1, exploring the growth and development of Wellington. There is a 1-day field trip to the Wellington CBD to carry out geographic research on a contemporary issue facing the city. Students will learn how to collect, present, and evaluate primary and secondary data, as well as weigh up different perspectives and courses of action to address local issues. As part of a global study, students will also interpret the distribution of terrorist attacks throughout the world, unpacking the factors and processes that contribute to this, and the impacts on people and places around the world.
Topics covered:
The urban growth of Wellington: population growth and trends
Geographic research: planning, collecting and presenting primary data
Explain aspects of a contemporary geographic issue using secondary research
Explain aspects of a topic from around the globe through a spatial lens
Applying basic geographic skills and concepts to a variety of environments (end-of-year exam)
Assessment
There are four internal assessments totalling 14 credits, and one external assessment totalling 4 credits. The total credits offered over the year is 18.
