9MAO: Year 9 Te Ao Māori
Course Description
Knowledge of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori are essential skills in many careers. This course will enable students to communicate in simple Te Reo within a range of familiar situations using appropriate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students will also develop an understanding and appreciation of Tikanga Māori - Māori values and customs. A visit to a local marae is an essential part of the course.
Topics covered: Greetings • My home • My classroom • Food • Prayers • Marae protocol • Waiata
Assessment
Regular topic based assessment takes place throughout the year involving the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students are assessed in both formal and informal situations.
Next steps
This course leads to the Year 10 Te Ao Māori option course.
Course contributions
Students are asked to contribute $30 towards the cost of a workbook and a marae visit.
