SCI100: Level 1 Science
Course Description
Level 1 Science courses are highly recommended for all Year 11 students. Scientific knowledge is turned into a new way of thinking that builds upon previously learned ideas and innovations which is then updated and expanded as new evidence comes to hand. It helps us to understand ourselves and our place in the world. Scientific thinking and investigations often take a multi-pronged approach that encourages both logical and creative thinking. The Year 11 Science course is designed to continue to develop your understanding of the world around us through the Living, Material, and Physical Worlds of the Science Curriculum underpinned by the Nature of Science skills. For more information go to the Science Department Website
How do microbes cause disease? (Microbes in the Environment): Explore the crucial relationship between microorganisms and their environments, especially how some can cause disease in humans! By investigating how these microbes interact with factors like nutrients and waste in our bodies, you'll uncover their role in health and disease, gaining valuable insights into the science of life and health.
How do chemical reactions relate to our everyday lives? (Chemistry in Context, INT): Explore the various types of chemical reactions that occur all around us in our everyday lives. By identifying the patterns that such reactions follow, you’ll be able to make predictions about the material world around us and explain how materials can go from one form to another.
How does energy apply to the world around us? (Energy's Effect on Physics Systems, EXT): Explore what energy is, how energy changes, and how these concepts relate to real-world phenomena. By explaining how types of energy like heat and electricity function, you’ll identify the importance of energy and how it applies to all aspects of the world around us.
Assessments will be a range of practical work and theory work, where students will be given the opportunity to utilise a range of modes including practical demonstrations, written reports and examinations.
Recommendation for subject entry
