Level 1 Science
SCI100/101: Level 1 Science
Head of Department:
Course Description SCI100
Level 1 Science courses are highly recommended for all Year 11 students. Scientific knowledge is turned into a new way of thinking that builds upon previously learned ideas and innovations which is then updated and expanded as new evidence comes to hand. It helps us to understand ourselves and our place in the world around us. Scientific thinking and investigations often take a multi-pronged approach which encourages both logical and creative thinking. Through inquiry, critical thinking and careful observations, scientists search for practical and useful ways in which to benefit humankind. Through the use of collaborative learning opportunities like these, young scientists would experience in the real world. The Year 11 Science course is designed to introduce these young students with the Living, Material and Physical Worlds of the Science Curriculum along with the Nature of Science. For more information go to the Science Department Website
Topics covered: There are 7 units across the year: How do we stay safe from disease? How do we stay safe in car crashes? How do we stay safe from the dangers of chemicals? Earth in Equilibrium. Our Energy Crisis! There is NO Planet B! Create an action plan for improvement
These are portfolio tasks that contribute to: S1.1, S1.2 and one of PES1.1/PES1.2 or C&B1.1/C&B1.2
Prerequisite:
A minimum of Multistructural grades in Checkpoint Assessments and Examination.
Next steps
The Level 1 Science course opens pathways into many career opportunities once Silverstream students leave the College. Upon completion of this course, successful students are able to branch off into the future pathways of Level 2 Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Science.
Course contributions
$30 - Course contribution covers the cost of the online learning platform, Education Perfect.
Course Description SCI101 - Level 1 Practical Science
The Level 1 Practical Science courses are recommended for Year 11 students who found Year 10 Science challenging. In consultation with the HOD Science and the Year 10 Science teachers, students will be selected into this course. This internally based Practical Science course aims to build upon previously learned scientific knowledge which is then reinforced and expanded in a collaborative and dynamic way. There are 9-12 Numeracy credits available. Through the use of collaborative learning opportunities like these young Scientists would experience in the real world, the Year 11 Practical Science course is designed to introduce these students with the Living, Material and Physical Worlds of the Science Curriculum along with the Nature of Science.
