Course Description
This course is intended to encourage and enable Pacific students to engage with and affirm their traditional cultures and values. Students will investigate a hypothesis and draw a conclusion on an aspect of Pacific indigenous knowledge, society, change and development with consultation. . Non-Pacific students are also welcome to take this course.
Students credited with these Unit Standards are able to draw conclusions after investigating a hypothesis on an aspect of indigenous knowledge, societies, changes and developments. Students who wish to take Samoan will learn to participate and contribute in communities, exploring, make comparisons, express their views and relate to others.
Areas of investigation: historical events, myths & legends, global events, climate change, Sports, contemporary dances & music, traditional songs, colonisation, decolonisation, tattooing/tatau, art & design, traditional weaving, traditional values, beliefs, cultivation, matai system, myths & legends, cultivation, fishing, flora, past events, voyaging, migration, performing arts, myths & legends, hospitality, etc
Assessment: Pacific Studies Level 3: Unit Standards Level 2 (Investigation and Conclusion), Level 3 NCEA (Speech, Writing, Listening, Reading Comprehension, Interactions)
Prerequisite
Fluency in Samoan L1 & L2. For students without qualifications, entry at discretion of teacher in charge.

This leads to a Bachelor of Pacific Studies or Samoan at University.
