Course Description
This course is intended to encourage and enable Pacific students to engage with and affirm their traditional cultures and values. Students will investigate and draw conclusions of an aspect of Pacific and indigenous knowledge, society, change and development with guidance. Students will also communicate understanding of a variety of Pacific cultures through planned presentation with guidance. Non-Pacific students are also welcome to take this course.
Students who are interested in learning Samoan language will have an opportunity to do NCEA Level 2 Samoan within this course. Students will be able to communicate information, ideas and opinions by responding to varied texts. They will also manage self, relate to others, participate and contribute in communities by analysing ways in which Samoan culture is organised for different purposes and audiences.
Areas of investigation in any of the Pacific Islands: art & design, traditional weaving, traditional values, beliefs, cultivation, matai system, myths & legends, cultivation, fishing, flora, traditional foods and dancing, voyaging, migration, performing arts, myths & legends, historical events, cultural protocols, etc.
Assessment
Pacific Studies Level 2: Unit Standards Level 2 (Investigation and Conclusion)
NCEA Level 2 (Reading Comprehension, Writing, Listening, Speech & Interactions)
Prerequisite
Fluency in Samoan. NCEA L1. For students without qualifications, entry at discretion of teacher in charge.
