TM4T Techniques 2.1.4 - Planning - Rocks Discussion

Let's look at a similar simpler situation, but this time with three rocks, and a litre of sand.

In Jar One, the sand has been put in first, with the rocks resting on top of the sand. In the second, the rocks have been put in first, and the sand added later, filling in the gaps between the sand. Obviously, it is easier to close the lid on Jar Two.

Returning to our original problem... there is really not much wrong with the original logic. If things (events, tasks) fit in seamlessly, it doesn't hurt much to schedule them first.

After that though, the best approach is to schedule the biggest things FIRST.

SoAnd then to continue with the next biggest, and so on, filling in any gaps as you go...

So... that explains the best way to plan tasks and events, and explains why TM4T planning works the way that it does, basing everything  on the school schedule, so the big things are always planned first. Befpre we move onto the practicalities of school planning, though, we must share some rather depressing news: the big-things-first approach is only a guideline. In fact there is no mathematically-robust algorithm to make an optimum plan; all we have is rules of thumb and guidelines. The basic approach therefore is always to use your common sense - if youre plan doesn't look sensible, then change it !
