Here is one teacher's list of jobs - outside of teaching:

- Lesson preparation (planning, and getting the classroom ready)

- Formal summative assessment (for example marking GCSE coursework)

- Informal summative assessment (for example, end-of-term exams at KS3)

- Formative assessment (positive feedback on student's work)

- Formal behaviour management (for example, detentions)

- Parental contact (phone-calls, meetings, letters, e-mails)

- After-school clubs (preparing. running, publicising)

- Student reports (writing, revising, discussing)

- Parents evenings (preparing for, taking notes, answering queries)

- Student references for university (writing, reading)

- School trips, school fêtes, school pantomimes, school sports (researching, preparing, attending)

- Work placements (visits and student advice)

- Extra-curricular support for G&T & SEN students

- Reporting faults (in IT and office equipment)

- Reading Individual Education Plans and planning differentiation

- Clearing litter and cleaning classrooms (between lessons)

- Ordering supplies (eg stationery from school office)

- Developing curriculum material (presentations, worksheets)

- Identifying and developing cover material for learning supervisors

- Helping groups of students (learning support, coursework)

- Working with students transferring from primary school

- Preparing for formal observations, reviews, and performance management

- Preparing and giving school assemblies

- Helping in the performance appraisal of others;

- Reviewing individual methods of teaching and programmes of work;

- Analysis of training needs and professional development

- Liaising with site management on health and safety issues

- Moderating coursework
