If you are an NQT or joining a new school, your induction period is gold dust. Unfortunately, many teachers report that they learn too little to prepare themselves for the tasks ahead. Here are some must-do tips.
a) Meet the office staff. All of them. Talk to them (unless they are already frantically busy). Make sure you know what they expect from you (this may vary greatly from school to school).
b) Try to get hands-on exposure to any systems and office equipment you will have to use. Many NQT teachers have horror stories about using a photo-copier under pressure. Many schools expect reasonable proficiency in the use of Interactive White Boards. Most schools have database systems on their computers to enter student grades, attendance and similar information. If you are not able to get some practice and iron out any issues, then plan when you will be able to do so. Look ahead. Anticipate problems, and try to resolve as many of them as you can before term starts. Keep your To-Do list at hand to plan anything which can't be done right now.
c) Get as much information about your timetable as you can. Be assertive if necessary. If details aren't available, ask when they will be available. If it isn't all decided yet, ask which bits are decided.
d) Get a map of the school and walk around it.
e) Get a copy of all must-know policies and procedures. Make sure you can read them when you need them. Ideally this means a copy on your memory stick.
