POWER Code Matrix table

This table is derived from the IBM POWER Code Matrix.

Please make sure you double check the information on IBM.com before using it. Comments, source below.

Sorry about the 404 links but IBM keeps moving them.

Comments

- Information collected from IBM.com: 2012-12-19 --> 2014-12-12, doesn't cover HMC V8R8.2.0

- The original tables have been greatly simplified for better overview.

- Empty cell = unsupported code combination, ok = supported code combination, number+ = the lowest supported level of the given firmware release.

- HMC levels older than V7 are not listed. If you need information about older HMC versions, please look it up on IBM's site.

- Only very old system firmware levels of POWER5 can be managed with HMC v6 or older.

- Consequently, POWER5 firmware releases older than SF240 are not listed because these are only supported by HMC 6.1.

- The SDMC compatibility is not listed, as it is discontinued and it wasn't very widely used anyway.

- Notice the relation between the firmware and HMC release numbering: xx350 = 7.3.5 and above, xx740 = 7.7.4 and above

- The firmware release links point to the XML files which include the latest level of the release.

- "Starting with POWER8, firmware will require a license key to be installed and activated. The POWER8 servers require machine code update entitlement at activation via an update access key (UAK) that.s checked at every activation and installation of firmware code." - not confirmed

- "OPAL is the system firmware in the stack of POWER8 processor-based server, PowerKVM."
