Specification - Function
Question 1a (examples below) will always ask you to ADD to a Specification for the Function of a ‘product’.
To make answering this easier for you always think about any of the following areas that you could comment upon to add to the Specification:
how would the choice of material affect the function of the product i.e. I would make it out of a bright and colourful plastic (Acrylic) to attract attention; I would make it from a clear acrylic so that the ‘book’ can be seen from all angles; I would make it from a lightweight metal such as Aluminium as it does not rust; I would look to use Aluminium as it is a lightweight material but is also very strong.
– How can you state how to make the ‘product’ safe? Look to say ‘I would round corners / round edges to ensure that there are no sharp corners / edges that would / could cut someone when accessing the unit / product etc.; I would look to cover and ‘hot’ parts of the product so as not to burn fingers;
You will nearly always be given dimensions in the picture as part of the question. Use that information to write a specification point about size. Remember that you need to allow hand access to the product (to be able to pick it up) and it should always be at eye level height
You could always make a point about the size or weight of a product in relation to picking it up, accessing it, lifting it, the weight of it, the feel of it etc. Ergonomics are how a product works with human measurements
– How the product looks. This could be colour, finish (shiny / matte), modern / retro, see through, curved shapes, colour coded i.e. one size goesin blue, another size in red, another in yellow etc.
Practice is the best way to prepare. Below you will find a variety of design problems with an example Q1a. Try and do these times - (less than 4 mins!)
