Scholars

A Design & Technology Scholarship is a recognition of a student’s abilities across a range of the broad spectrum of skills and techniques within the creative process of design whilst showcasing a mastery in a specialist area. Scholarship students will display a genuine passion for spending time in the Design & Technology workshops, for their own interests, to encourage other students and to support the department, both Prep and Senior, in producing outstanding exemplar work to be shared more widely.

Creative thinking, experimentation and independent learning are an integral part of this life-enhancing subject. There will be opportunities to create, innovate, design, make and evaluate a variety of well-crafted products that are fit for purpose. Scholarship students will have an interest in the design and development of products, using the most up-to-date technologies available here at RST, but are also aware of traditional manufacturing techniques and skills and how these can be used strategically.

A Design & Technology Scholar will be inquisitive, enjoy analysing situations and relish solving practical problems. They will be creative, resilient risk-takers, appreciating that often the best way of learning is through making mistakes.

Design & Technology Scholars will be supported by technicians, and Design & Technology teachers who themselves have a passion for design, and whose wide experience spans modern engineering, industrial design and product design.

Our facilities at RST include modern, spacious and very well-equipped workshops with a wide range of industrial grade manufacturing equipment ranging from traditional hand tools to the latest Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) facilities, including laser cutters, a CNC router and a number of various 3D printing machines. This range of additive and subtractive processing ability allows D&T Scholars to create products from a wide variety of materials and to develop a range of modern manufacturing skills. The workshops are well equipped for advanced sketching; digital design; modelling and investigating; and are complemented by suites of iMac’s, as well as iPad Pro’s, linked to a range of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

It is hoped in the future there will be a Design & Technology Scholars’ society, trips to local industry to see manufacturing in action, an overseas trip as well as visits by guest speakers to act as excellent sources of inspiration.

We value Design & Technology Scholars within our department where students are achieving the highest grades with an increasing number choosing to further study design-based university courses.

All Design & Technology Scholars are expected to:

Receive consistently high attainment and diligence / effort grades in Design & Technology.

Uphold the values of RST and be an excellent role model to other students in their approach and commitment to Design & Technology;
