Advanced SKETching
Advanced sketching, presentation & communication
For this phase in developing your skills you will: produce some 2D sketches using weight of line; sketch in 2 Point perpsective; learn how to present a 'composition' of an idea using 2D and 3D sketches; use markers at an Advanced level; digital sketching; foam modelling; CAD modelling; Hard foam modelling.
initial Concept ideas
On A3 paper, using a blue pencil, OR on Procreate (set up an A3 sheet) using a blue pencil, produce a range of 2D sketches of ideas for a Table Lamp. There are no restrictions regarding materials or design. For this initial sketching you need to produce at least 30 (Yes 30!!!) initial concept design ideas on your sheet. Ideas can overlap and be different sizes.
You could have 2 or 3 views for each idea (Top, Front, Side) and each sketch will count towards the 30. You should sketch in the 'floor' for the front and side views.
Before you start you need to research or else you won't know what to design or why.
Firstly, decide on who you are designing the Table Lamp for. What design styles to they like? Could you make the ideas look like a particular company in terms of design i.e. a Table Lamp for Dyson; a Table Lamp for Aston Martin; a Table Lamp for Bang & Olufsen etc. etc. Also think about the materials that you may want to use and how you can combine / join these materials together.
Secondly, you should conduct some initial research into current styles of Lamps and get ideas by conducting Google Images searches.
Lastly, you could use an AI software image generator (DreamStudio, Dalle, Midjourney etc.) to generate some initial concepts based on your criteria (key words). These could help give you starting points for sketches.
Components
Typically you would use bought in components like the example below (www.distinctiveobjects.co.uk) which include an On / Off button, LED's (colour changing) wires and a circuit board along with a power supply. You can of course use traditional light bulbs, edison style bulbs (old fashioned), LED strips etc. etc.
Add picture of an Edison bulb
The initial concept design ideas sheet below is for Earpod headphones. Note how many sketches there are to begin with.
The initial concept design ideas sheet below is for a Mist Diffuser. Note how many sketches there are to begin with.
Composition (2 Point perspective)
Select one of your 2D design ideas and, using the 'composition' template provided, sketch your Table Lamp concept from a variety of view points, including in 2 point perspective. Start this in blue pencil. The example below is for a Toaster design
Add fine line pen (keeping it 'sketchy') Add a little shading in fine len pen (0.3) to show where light may hit or areas of shadow. You may wish to scan in your design sheet at this stage so that you have a copy ready to take into digital sketching.
