digital sketching - 2D hand held whisks

digital sketching - Procreate

Now you will use an iPad and the Procreate app to render either the Hand Held Whisk Ideas sheet or the Kettle Concept ideas sheet but digitally. The blue pencil version of the sheet will be shared with you by your teacher. The recommended and most effective way to digitally sketch is to start by sketching in blue pencil on paper and then scan into Procreate to enhance the work digitally.

You will need to firstly Fine Line all of the designs using (ideally) the Technical Pen from the Inking brushes. You should use a variety of pen line thicknesses to create the Thick & Thin lines for all designs.

You will then use the Real Marker pen from the Sketch-a-day II brush pack (This is the most realistic marker pen on the iPad) and, using masks and new layer, render the same sheet. You will also have the option to add textures, shadows, background shadows onto this version which will elevate your work to an even higher and more professional standard. You can add additional design ideas or details to the existing designs if you wish.

NB You will need to Save / Share and Export your design work from the iPad onto your website and a link in the Google Classroom for each lesson, as normal.

You can use these QR codes below to spin a 3D CAD model around and gain an idea of what the product should 'conceptually' look like in 3D, including shadows. If you scan in the QR code with your phone camera this will open up a 3D CAD model in AR (Augmented Reality).

Once you have added colour / textures / materials you need to add final shadows and highlights to each of the designs to give them depth.

The example below (suspension spring) demonstrates really clearly the difference shadows and then highlights make to a marker pen sketch.
