Rendering basic 3D shapes

This series of lessons will introduce you to rendering objects and forms in 3D and will help you learn how a light source will reflect off the surface of different shapes.

👆 2D to 3D. rendering 3d shapes using procreate 👉

Step 1

The first layer of marker pen using the mask tool. Remember that all edges are always dark. Use the Marker brush from the Sketch-a-day Mega pack II and choose a shade of grey or a colour. Don't mix colours and just use one (like you did with the 2D Basic Shapes sketching sheet).

Brush: Sketch a day 2 megapack. Real marker.

Colour: Light tone of grey

Use layer 1 to create your mask for every step

Make sure you add the colour to the Rendering layer.

Step 2

Apply a darker (grey) marker colour to a layer above the original layer to give more layers of tone and greater depth to your shapes

Brush: Sketch a day 2 megapack. Real marker.

Colour: Darker tone of grey.

Move the colour picker vertically down on the colour picker to pick a darker tone within the same colour range 👉

Step 3

Reflections are subtle lines of colour that represent reflections of colour from objects that might be in the room with the shape. You can select any colour your want for reflection lines but once you have picked the colour, keep it the same on all of the shapes.

Look at the subtle lines of colour in the shapes on the right.

Brush:

Sketch a day 11 megapack - real marker. 2% or 3 % thickness

Colour:

Your choice. Consider if the grey you used is warm or cold and pick colour accordingly.

Step 4

Shadows will make a huge difference to the 3D appearance of your shapes. They should have softer edges than the dark marker layer so you should use an appropriately soft edged brush with a lowered opacity.

Brush:

Sketch a day 2 megapack. Soft clean air

Colour:

Black. Opacity 50%

Step 5

Highlights

Brush:

Soft clean air. 3 - 4% size

Colour:

White. Opacity 50%

Step 6

Drop shadows and colour block.

Using masks and layers add a perpective linking box behind the 3D forms. Add some marker colour to this box to help brighten up the sheet and also to demonstrate the forms. Then you could again use masks and add a soft black shadow behind the forms to help give them some 'pop' off the page.

Step 3

Using the Dirty Air brush add some additional depth to the forms through adding shadows. NB You could add Highlights with the Clean Air brush if you wish.
