Marker Render (Using Light)

Examples with a light source

How to use markers

To use markers effectively you will need Marker Paper and Marker Pens. A soft black pencil will help you to add further depth to the forms. All sketch work should be completed in blue pencil first and then black fine line pen to define the edge.

Go around the rectangle shape using the rule 'All Edges Are Always Dark' but add more marker pen to one side and also the bottom of the shape. Let the marker dry for 30 seconds.

Add a second layer of marker pen over the first layer and then apply a little more marker pen to one side

The reason you add more marker to the bottom of the shape / 'object' is to make it 'sit' on the page. If light is always from above then the bottom of the object will be slightly darker. An object casts a shadow from light so darkening the bottom of the shape starts adding more depth and shadow.

How to use Markers with a light source. Explanation...

Step 1

Ensure that you have completed your page of sketches and then added fine line pen. Choose your light source (Top left or Top right - light always comes from above!). Then All Edges Are Always Dark. The side opposite your light source should then have a larger area of marker than the side with light.

Step 2

Let the marker pen dry! (about 30 seconds).

Add your second layer of marker pen using the technique All Edges Are Always Dark, but this time bring your marker a little further inside your shape but remember to leave areas without any marker.
