Inspiration / Mood / User board

A Mood board (slide) and an Inspiration board (slide) are used to help to get to know what the Client / User group / Market want from your product.

A Mood Board would reflect (show) what the client / user would like to see from your product by looking at what they currently like. Sometimes this can also be titled Client Board. This could include colours, materials, technology, other products, environment where the product will be used, values (reduce waste / recycled etc.), styling (modern, sleek, retro, old fashioned, playful, cute, fun etc.). This then gives a feel for what your client / user likes as you are designing for them (NOT YOU!). i.e. if you were designing some gym equipment for a wealthy client you would create a mood board full of expensive / high end premium products that would fit with the lifetsyle of the chosen user and what they like. Perhaps they like premium materials, or want something that looks very special, or perhaps they like certain colours or maybe they want it to match their home.

An inspiration board looks at products and images that inspire you to design, meeting the values of your client / user group. i.e. you could be designing a lamp / nighlight for a young boy who is really into space, therefore your inspiration board could have images of space rockets, satellites, boys colours, intersts for young children, designs associated with young children (bigger buttons, bright colours etc.). If you were designing for a young boy you wouldn't choose to use sleek ultra modern, expensive materials but look to design a playful, colourful, cartoon like product that would appeal to them.

Work of designers

Another great starting point for design inspiration is to look at successful designers and their work output. Look at their work and then try to imagine where they got their inspiration. A great example of 2 successful designers who reference each other’s work is the German designer for Braun, Dieter Rams, and the former chief designer for Apple, Jonathan Ive. Both designers cite each other’s work as an inspiration for their design work. You could also look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_industrial_designers to see a list of other designers that you may wish to look at.
