You now need to select, develop and refine one of your initial Design Ideas. Consider the shape and form. Can you change anything? If you have lots of straight edges then try and round them. If you have lots of curves then what happens if you add straight lines. Look at the base and anything you could develop. What if you added some holes? Have you developed all parts (base, neck, head, lantern shade? Have you identified where the wire and switch will be?
This work will be completed on the iPad using Procreate. It should also include photographs of your test foam model. This is to 'realise' your developed idea before starting resin pouring and manufacture to ensure that you are sure of your design and that it will work! More information on Foam modelling can be found here.
You will use Procreate to develop one of your chosen design ideas. You should look to modify and test the shape and form of your design idea for the table lamp. You should 'integrate' photos of your foam model using the layers in Procreate. You can use a guide template from your teacher if you wish. You can then use the Pen tool to sketch over your photos and also the Marker & Mask tools to add texture / colour to your model. You can then use the eraser tool to remove sections from your model and the colour clone tool to add more. Your teacher will show you this.
Using Procreate and the Technical Pen and / or the Outline Inking Pen you can go around the outside of your Blue Foam model to define the edges. You can make changes to the model using the pen tool and earse parts of add using the colour clone tool. Your teacher can demonstrate this to you.
To develop your Design Idea proposal ready for final 3D CAD modelling and manufacture we want you to really 'explore' and 'question' your design. Ask Questions!
Look at the 'base' piece. Is the shape right? Could you angle the edges? Could you round the corners? Can you round the edges? Could you add a curve into the side? Does it look bulky (big) or just right? Could you angle the top? Can you split it differently? Where will the resin and timber go? Can you change or modify the shape of these?
Look at the 'neck' part. Is the shape correct? Could you add holes? Could you add any cuts? Could you change the style or shaping of it so that it is larger at the bottom and thinner at the top? What if it were the other way around? What colours might you use? Does the 'neck' shape match the base and the 'head shape'?
Look at the 'head' piece. Is the shape correct? Does it look bulky? Is it to thin? Can you curve edges? Can you angle edges? Can you round corners? Can you round the shape? Can you make the head shape look more interesting?
Where will the switch go? Can you move this to a different place and will it look correct?
What about the lantern design. What can you do? Will this match the shapes of the base, neck and head?
Does the overall shape look good? When made, would you want this in your bedroom or house / apartment? If not, then make some changes to make it look more stylish!
