White Hawk

Introduction:

I've been meaning to build a wing with 1407 motors for over a year now. Unfortunately, there are always more ideas and projects than there is time and I've been flip flopping between different projects not really making much progress on any of them. Therefore, I decided to focus on one thing again and finally finished this.

Components ($35):

  • Dollar tree foam board (1 sheet)
  • 2x 9gram servos
  • Furibee 30A 2-6s ESC
  • 3A bluesky ubec
  • Frsky 8 channel receiver
  • SZ speed 1407B 4000kv motor
  • 4.5x4.5E prop
  • Bamboo skewers for internal structural support
  • Push rods
  • Battery strap & silicone anti slip pad

Conclusion:

1407 motors are great since they weigh only a few grams more than 1306, but have a lot more power. With this particular build, I didn't focus on making it super light weight, but decided to continue exploring different inner frame layouts. This particular frame should be somewhere between corsair and mjolnir in strength as is reflected by the 153 grams dry weight. I also decided on using regular packing tape for strengthening the wing. Regular packing tape is thicker and weighs more, but I wanted to see how well it would hold up compared to the thinner tape I usually use.

Update 9/20/18:

So the maiden didn't go well. In fact, I couldn't even launch it due to terrible torque roll. Tried quite a few times and smacked it hard into the ground quite a few times until the servos died (damaged pots). Yes, the frame is still good enough to use again amazingly. Will need to figure out what the issue is.
