Hummer

Introduction:

I built this mainly to see what the hype was all about regarding the efficiencies with 1s and 65mm props. I also wanted to make use of the things building up in my spare parts bin.

Components:

  • Unknown frame (for brushed motors)
  • Fusion X3 FC/ESC
  • HappyModel 0703 19000kv motors
  • 65mm props
  • LST S2 AIO camera/vtx
  • frsky micro D8 receiver
  • Buzzer

Conclusion:

I wanted to go light weight, but didn't want to buy any new parts. It could've been much lighter with more modern parts, but still a bit chunky at 34g dry. As I was testing the parts during the build, I noticed that one of the motors didn't spin up while arming. I thought it was a clunky motor issue and decided to modify blheli to up the startup power to 1.5. This somewhat fixed the issue, but I later realized it was just masking it.

The maiden flight lasted less than a minute as the copter crashed and smoked after 30 seconds of flight. After some diagnosis, I realized that the motor which wasn't spinning up was defective and binding. It will spin, but would require more amps to do so. Unfortunately, spinning the 65mm props required the motor to pull too many amps from the 5a ESC and fried it.
