UFO

Introduction:

After the quick death of hummer, and the associated lessons learned with bad motors, I wanted to pick up where I left off and continue with another attempt...this time using better motors.

Components:

  • Top plate from SPCMaker 80a with mounts cut from a mobula 7 frame
  • Teeny 1s FC + ESC
  • Mobula 7 0802 16000kv motors
  • 65mm props
  • LST S2 AIO camera/vtx
  • frsky micro D8 receiver
  • Buzzer

Conclusion:

Instead of using the same frame, I decided to do something fun and different and used the top plate of an existing quad instead. Most of the time really was spent on figuring out how to mount the motors as I couldn't mount them on the existing carbon since the props would hit each other. I had to spread them farther out and so I ended up cannibalizing the mounts from a mobula 7 frame instead and using a combination of PETG filament and hot glue melted on the frame. The result was surprisingly strong. I also wanted to cut away the "hoops" after it was all done, but decided to keep them even though they added extra weight since they gave it a very unique look. I was targeting 29g, but it came to 32g dry at the end. I may have hit my target weight if I trimmed off the extra carbon hoops though.

This one is a very smooth and efficient flier, although it cannot freestyle nicely due to a lack of power. Even with the higher rates which I usually fly with, flips were very slow since the motors just didn't have enough power to spin the props fast enough. Also, turtle mode does not work since the props do not generate enough reverse thrust. Lastly, these receivers are no good with any sort of range.

In conclusion, this would be a very good trainer craft, but needs better motors to be of any real fun for freestyle.

Update 1/25/19 - the OSD chip fried on the board and now there is no OSD, but otherwise flies fine.
